Mean Platelet Volume was created by Dave
My CBC was good today (230), except my MPV (mean platelet volume) was higher than usual for me. I have gotten a lot of CBCs the past 6 months, and my MPV is usually right around 10.1. Today it was 10.8. Does anyone know of any reason it would be higher today besides having shorter platelet life? I know young platelets are bigger, but I'm hoping this doesn't mean anything bad. 10.8 is still in the normal range, but it is rare for me. I had a 10.7 on Feb 20, but that is the only other count I have gotten over 10.3 since recovering from low platelets. My last 4 CBCs were right around 10.1, and I have used that to show stability even as my counts have fluctuated between 194 and 264. Has anyone else been able to learn anything from their MPV? Can it be used to predict future platelet counts?

7 months before diagnosis with ITP, I had a count of 209 and a MPV well over 11. I think the battle had begun, and increased production had me winning at the time, but I don't know. My system was all out of whack, and I had anxiety. Did anyone else have increased MPV before low platelet counts? Is there another reason for increased MPV?

You're worrying about minor differences which mean nothing. All values go up and down slightly, it's normal. You can't predict future platelet counts from any of it. The MPV is useful for diagnosing ITP but nothing more. If your MPV were low they wouldn't have diagnosed ITP but would have looked for something else. The ups and downs and slight differences are normal.

Yep.....MPV is normal in the 9.7–12.8 range.
Rejoice, it appears that your numbers are 'normal'.

Relax. Sometimes a number is just a number.
