brusing only with low counts? was created by Michellek
Question: Does spontaneous bruising only occur with low platate counts or can it occur with normal/high platate counts. My count on Thursday was 232,000.

I am just curious that’s all.

ITP won't cause spontaneous bruising at high counts. Steroid treatment can cause very easy bruising which sometimes seems to be spontaneous.

Bruising can occur with normal counts. It depends on severity of injury that may cause the bruise.

Also see some discussion of this in the thread "

TO quote Erica from that thread: "Sometimes a hematoma is just a hematoma"

"Someone here posted recently a really clever guide to bruises - if a bruise is sore, you probably got it the normal way by clunking yourself somehow. If a bruise isnt' sore, maybe it is an ITP type bruise that occurred without a real injury."

I imagine this is not an uncommon experience - you might mention your ITP to someone and explain it and the person says something like "Oh, I get bruises all the time that I have no explanation for". A version of this conversation occurs often in my experience - which means that many people get bruises for no explanation. So when they occur at high platelet numbers in ITP patients, I suspect the phenomena is akin to those bruises in people without ITP...

Good point. A sore bruise is usually from a good Clunk that runs deeper into the muscle vs an ITP bruise that is just under the skin and does not really hurt.
