My mother was diagnosed with ITP in june,2010. For 4 months she ws kept on prednisolone and then it ws gradually stopped.Since then her count has fluctuated between 40,000 to 60,000. Few days back she ws diagnosed with lymph node enlargement. Haematologist referred her to Dentist. Dentist told us lymph node enlargement mght b due to dental infection. they wld require to extract 4 teeth. But her count at that time was 39,000 so she was referred back to haematologist so as to hv required count so that dental work can b done safely.

haematologist has strtd 40mg prednisolone and asked us to get CBC 3-4 days later and if the count is above 70,000 go back to dentist.

Need to know is it fine to have the tooth extraction done while on prednisolone even though the count reaches above 70,000????

Are there medicines that can be taken prior to getting the tooth extraction done so as to minimize the bleeding??

  • Diagnosed in 2000, at 59, after being on moderately high doses of NSAIDs for arthritis. Splenectomy and rituxan both failed (2004). Did well on prednisone till summer 2018--then terrible reactions. Promacta since 11-19.

I'm almost always on prednisone, and though I've never had a tooth extracted, I've had other extensive dental work done--and, more important, I've had different parts of ME extracted while on prednisone! The surgeons wanted my platelets up, but they expressed no concern about prednisone.

If her doctors think she is at risk for bleeding during or after the extractions, they will take precautions or give her special instructions. At 70, she should be okay.

They may likely give her antibiotics since she already has infection. Other than that, being on Prednisone shouldn't be a problem.
