Got word from GP this morning that my platelet count is 34,000. She wants to see me Monday morning - and apparently I no longer have ITP but Thrombocytopenia.

I've seen the difference in the various explanations here but what does that mean for you and why do they say that? How does that make you feel?

What does it mean you do not have ITP any longer? I thought those two were the same thing basically! Does that mean that now I have normal counts that I no longer have ITP? I am confused!

Thrombocytopenia simply means low platelets. ITP is one cause of low platelets. I doubt that they no longer think you have ITP. Probably just a doctor using the more general term of thrombocytopenia.

Paddy, are you not seeing a haematologist? Be careful because it sounds as though your GP may want to treat and some, me included wouldn't treat at such a count.

How did she make that determination that you no longer have ITP? A person has thrombocytopenia and not ITP if they have another condition causing low platelets such as hepatitis, cancer, etc.

Shannon - once a person has ITP, they always have ITP, even if counts are up. Technically, you are in ITP remission.

Went to the doctors this morning. She had heard back from the Haematologist at our local General. My diagnosis is, according to old notes:

"Inherited form of Macro Thrombocytopenia" and I have giant platelets.

On Friday, my son Brendan had his appointment with the Royal London Hospital for Integrated Medicine (next door to GOSH but a part of it still) to have his platelet levels checked. They were interested in me, too. We both had blood tests, and they rang later that day with the Platelet Reults: Mine were 30,000 [probably due to the cracked rib I received during last week playing football with the kids and dogs in the park] and my son's, 80,000. Next appointment will be to discuss the examination of our platelets under microscope and to test my other children.

This is an inherited condition, but I know of no other member of my family over the last few generations who have had it.

Inherited Macro Thrombocytopenia is definitely not ITP.

After a little digging just now, I have come across Bernard-Soulier Syndrome, something which would account for the large platelets and the platelet dysfunction as far as I can make out?

Ah so your platelets are even larger than ours. Well done them for spotting it and diagnosing it.

Okay, makes sense that you no longer have ITP if you have a diagnosed inherited platelet disorder. As Ann said, it's great that they found it!
