What is safe at 50k?

What is safe at 50k? was created by eappel
So last week my husband saw his first positive response from the Nplate (after reaching the 10th level). Counts rose to 70k without IVIG (yay!). We still have to see what this week brings but if the meds continue to work (fingers crossed) he is wondering what kind of activities are safe for him. We know the Nplate aims to keep counts around 50k. So if that is where he levels off...is he safe to resume his normal activities. He's no daredevil or anything but we go snowboarding in the winter, he wants to do a mountain bike ride, possibly get another tattoo, but is worried if he scrapes his arm he'll bleed to death or something.

I'm nervous about him asking his doctor. Doc seems overly-cautious and is more into scaring him then being realistic. So I thought I would check with you guys...I know 50k is safe...but what is "safe" for ITP?

Thanks so much in advance!

The big risk is a head bleed. Does he wear a helmet to mountain bike or snowboard? You can have surgery at 50k but if you smack your head hard doing sports it could be a problem.

We have members (ok maybe only one) who have sky dived at well below 50k but that's not for everyone!

Thanks so much! That list is a big help. Now the only issue is trying to convince him to wear a helmet!

There is also the possibility that N-Plate will take his counts way above 50. When that happens, take advantage of it!

50's a great count; everyone is different, but there is nothing I wouldn't do at 50.

Obviously, he should wear a helmet whether his count is 5, 50, or 500. Take him for a walk through a neuro rehab ward. He'll get it.

if it helps, last summer i was at 46 and went on a theme park ride which spins you round and round and goes upside down - aside from the dizziness and adrenalin rush, nothing to affect my ITP. Only went on it the once, but that was enough to make me feel normal. Everything in moderation!

He should be wearing a helmet regardless, but especially because he has ITP - i've never skiied or snowboarded, but it's still something i'd like to try - think I will probably stick to the baby slopes though!
