Having recently had a splenectomy due to persistently low platelet numbers, i was wondering if anyone had any info on travel abroad. Prior to being diagnosed I was a very keen backpacker. Work having inevitably taken over somewhat now, i still like to head to slightly different places (i.e. not Costa-del-whatever).
Has anyone had any issues traveling abroad since a splenectomy? Im particularly thinking about long haul flights and lack of immunity to some exotic infection.

I had my spleen out 4 years ago. Since then, I have travelled (repeatedly) internationally to the UK, Hungary, and Spain. I have not had any problems picking up infections on flights. I think people are very different on this front, so you will want to keep an eye out the first few times.

Good luck, and good travels.
