Petechiae question

Hi all, my college age daughter was diagnosed with itp this past summer. She has had two rounds of high dose dexamethasone but has been able to maintain a platelet count of around 55,000 for the past 6 weeks or so without any further treatment. Even though her counts are fairly stable and above 50,000 she has been having small petechiae on her shoulders where her backpack sits. She also currently has an ankle injury and is having lots of small petechiae on her armpits and her hands from her crutches. Is it normal to have these small pinprick size petechiae on pressure points with counts as high as hers? Do we need to be worried even though her counts are “safe”? Thanks for any help!

It's normal to have petechiae anywhere there is pressure on the skin, even with normal counts. Sneezing, vomiting or coughing can cause it, or sitting cross-legged. Anytime the blood flow is cut off, small blood vessels can pop. When it happens in people without ITP, they might not even notice because they aren't looking for it. I used to get it from sleeping on my hand at night (hand under head).

I would worry more if it were not in a place where she is putting pressure or if it is spreading.
