Just diagoned with ITP ..count was ZERO !!!!

Hello My name is Chris Mize, Im 44yrs old from Hartwell,Ga. Having a platelet disorder is all new to me. I dont know what to expect from it, as of being now , weeks, or months later on. Im not sure when all the symtoms started but as for several months back I noticed I was tired alot. At work early in the am hours I was tired and had not really gotten into the day good yet. I would come home in the afternoons and take at times 3-4 hr naps everyday. Around the 1st of Sept/2012 while at work I noticed I had a big melon size bruise on my belly. That afternoon i noticed small red dots on my ankles and feet. The next morning another bruise appeared on my hand. I then thought it was a spider bite on my hand and belly. Went to the Dr and found out my blood platelets was at ZERO. I was sent to a specialist where again it was confirmed of my low count. And was told I had ITP. And was amitted to the hospital for 3 days. After hours and hours of treatment of IVIG and Rituximab over those 3 days my count went up to 29,000. I was released and sent home, where I spent the next 4 days in bed. I had a migraine those days and was puking often. When I return to the specialist , my blood platelet count had dropped back to 8,000. I recieved another 5hour treatment of Rituximab. Next week I will be going to my 2nd treatment. I hope that my count has held and even gone higher. Right now I cant even walk outside without getting tired and weak. I spend most of the days in bed....I was hoping to be able to go back to work 2 days ago, but the Dr says not for awhile. Im not sure how all this will efect my work abilities.

Good luck! Hoping for safe levels for you. I go in Thursday. Hoping for no more drops and stability in the 20's a rise would be great but not holding my breath. Btw... I am 5 weeks from my last dose of Rituximab but still optimistic. Doc says he won't worry until the 12 week mark. So hang in there.

Welcome Chris. We are one year apart in age,45. I was diagnosed at 36. Prednisone and two Platelet transfussions did not work for me. First round of Rituxan treatments lasted 16 months. The second round is going on almost three years. Have you ever had your Iron level checked? Mine was low and treated. I regained alot of my energy back once Iron levels went up. Not that ot is a big deal, but you posted on the Parents of childern with ITP section. There is an adult section plus a "Man cave" option for men with ITP. Hoping the Rituxan works for you. Be patient as it can take several weeks after the last treatment before results can be seen. Your counts may bounce around,so do not get discouraged.

My count did drop to 1,000. during the treatment today--they did a bone marrow biopsy on me.. tomorrow and Fri IVIG treatments...!!!
