My 20 year old God daughter was sent home from college with declining platelets, lethargy and bruising. Platelets are in the 50s now. Without insurance, we have been unable to get anyone at county clinics to diagnose the issue. Internet searches lead me here. Can anyone recommend a doctor near San Jose that might work with us to disgnose the cause. Do I check her into a hospital or give her a protein shake and send her back to school? A county doctor can see her in March but I don't know if it can wait that long? Thanks, Dan

Neither. At 50, she wouldn't need to be hospitalized and a protein shake won't help her counts (shouldn't hurt them either). She could go to school, but really should be monitored at this point. I wouldn't wait until March.

Has she been taking any new meds lately? Herbal supplements?

Nothing new that I know of, but I will ask. Who knows what kids away at college put in their bodies! Thanks for the quick advice. I'll get her in to see a Hematologist before she returns to school.

Good luck! Her GP will work in a pinch, although that's not the ideal situation.
