New lupus thing for me, "pterygium" was created by eklein
Hi lupus people,
So I have a new lupus thing, it's more stupid than awful considering the big picture. Some of my nails, toes and fingers, are messed up. At first a terrible dermatologist told me I had psoriasis but then I saw a smart one who figured out it was a lupus related thing called pterygium inversum unguis. Basically the nail is adhering to the skin underneath it which deforms the nail and irritates the skin above and below the nail. I had some fingernail splitting and was walking around with duct tape on my nails to keep them from catching on stuff. Lucky I'm not too vain.

But platelets are still good!
:)

That sounds awful. Can it be treated?

Not really. The derm recommended this over the counter stuff, DermaNail, that helps the nail be less breakable. I think it is helping but slow. There are pretty serious treatments that might or might not help and aren't worth it. Knowing what it is finally and relief it isn't psoriasis and isn't serious, I'm not that bothered. One toe has been annoying.

What if you had the nail removed and soaked it daily?

Then it might have the same problem when it grows back or it might not.

Erica - You never know. I've had a toe nail removed and it actually felt better once it was gone. Different reason, I know, but couldn't hurt.

Well the thing is the nail thing doesn't really hurt. My toe is annoying now and then so I put a bandaid on it and it's fine. My fingernails are only annoying if they split and I'm not careful and they catch on something. And nobody's face should be close enough to my fingernails or toenails to notice they are weird. The one person whose face might be near doesn't care about it at all.

What IS bothering me is some base of thumb arthritis in my right hand. I am pretty sure it is regular osteoarthritis and not lupus arthritis. I need to find some kind of brace or something to wear on my hand to rest it. That's what's hurting.
