Can daughter get flu shot was created by emma1
My daughter will be 15 this month and was diagnosed in 12/09. She got her flu every year so far but now that she has ITP, does one still get the shot? What have others done?

Both of our doctors told us that Emmy had to have one because she just finished with Rituxan. She just got the shot yesterday.
And finished Rituxan 3 days prior.

I get the flu shot every year and have never had any problems. I didn't get it this year as I was on nplate at the time and the doctor didn't know if it would react to the nplate. It's probally a good idea to talk to her doctor about it.

My daughter's platelets did plummet from the flu shot but I think it was much less severe and quickly bounced back compared to having the full blown flu.

Just be careful in your timing of the shot.

Definitely talk to your daughter's doctor about it because each person is different. I just asked my Hema about getting a flu shot 3 weeks ago and he told me it would be ok.

Our hemonc told us that any immunization would not be effective right after taking Rituxan. Tim did not get his last year because his platelets were so low that the hemonc was concerned with the needle stick, not the shot itself. It has seemed to correlate in the past with reactivating his ITP, but then other times it did not. As a psych student, I've learned correlation does not equal causation. So, it may have been a seasonal thing with him, at the time. Now he's on NPlate and he got his flu shot today. he's on a low dose of it, 1mg/kg.

We were just at the Hemotologist yesterday and had planned on getting a flu shot for my 12 year. However her counts are at 3 :(
Doctor said he won't give a flu shot until we get the numbers back up.
The risk of bleeding when the needle goes into her muscle was too great.
And they won't do the mist b/c that's a live virus.

Hope your daughter's counts improve quickly.

An update for my daughter. Last year's swine flu vaccine made her counts go from normal to petechia appearing on her legs along with some mild fluish symptoms (and quickly recovered). This year she had the regular flu shot and had no side effects and no petechia.

So each shot is different.

Jaxen has been on the N~Plate trial for a couple years now. He is also without a spleen. In my opinion, not only CAN your daughter get the flu shot, but she SHOULD. ITP is not a disorder that causes immuno suppression, however..... these children appear to be unable to fight two things at one time. When they get sick, the platelets seem to get the short end of the stick!

Jaxen does get his flu shot every year and due to his risk with not having a spleen, the rest of our family does as well. This years flu shots apparently are including the H1N1 WITH the flu shot so it is all together in one shot! :)

I would still talk to your doctor, but a lot of us have learned that sometimes it is much more comfortable to talk to our doctors with a little bit of knowledge in our back pockets!
