Counts during cold/virus was created by jlollman
Hi all,

Just curious how your child reacted when he/she had a cold or virus? My son had a rise in platelets for the first time ever and it was after having a cold. Went from 35k to 58k.
I am hoping this is good news but hemo. also said he could be going up from the cold? I thought most kids went down. Curious as to what your kids do when they have an illness.

Thanks!!

Julie

As an adult, I tend to go up with viruses and down with antibiotics. However, I recently had an drop and the only factor that was different than normal was I had just gotten over a sniffly nose thing. When I mentioned to my hemo that wasn't the normal trend with me, he said it was more common to see them drop with colds and viruses.

My son definitly varies illness from ilness....in december he had a cold and his counts went to 101,000. Most recently he had the stomach flu (about 3 weeks ago) and his counts took a major nose dive.....they went to the lowest we have ever caught 8.000. So i guess it really depends on the person and the illness.

Brady's platelets always fall during an illness. We don't check him that often anymore, but in the beginning of dealing with ITP he would get a bad cold or something and it would be followed by pale skin, dark circles under his eyes and nosebleeds, so we would know he was low and would need treatment. Early on, he got an ear infection and was put on antibiotics, which made his count go up. We thought maybe we had found an easy treatment - daily antibiotics! - but his hematologist said it may just be a one-time thing. I think he has only had antibiotics one time since and they had no effect on his count. But his count still appears to drop with any illness.

My daughter was diagnosed with ITP in Dec. She just had her first cold with it and it was a very mild cold. We ended up in emergency due to all the peticuli. She has been in the 55,000 range and it dropped to 22,000. 2 days later it was up to 32000 and 10 days after we are back up to 56000. Scares to me to think what would happen if it was a very bad cold or the flu.

So its seems that every child reacts different to them. Very interesting.

With Camden his numbers fall at the onset of the sickness/cold and then (without treatment) go up. With swine flu he even hit normal numbers (250,000+), but usually he just goes up in to the 50,000 range until the sickness is over. It does seem like once his body starts fighting the virus/infection that it is distracted and quits destroying platelets. I do agree that every kids seems different with ITP...our son has not had any petechia in the 10 months since diagnosis.

Zach's counts always go up when he is sick. As soon as he recovers, they go back down to his "normal" 70 - 90k.

Kayla's counts always drop when she is sick, even with an infected splinter  Every time I hear a sniffle we do a body check and almost always find those dreaded spots :S
