My daughter is going to have a bone marrow biopsy in a couple of weeks and I was just wondering if anyone could answer some questions.

1. She will have general anesthetic but I'm just wondering how much it hurts after and for how long?

2. Will she need pain relief after and if so is paracetamol enough seeing she can't have ibuprofen?

3. Is bleeding a problem at a count of 20ish?

4. Did they stay off school the next day?

Thank you.

Based on dougies experience...........didn't hurt much, paracetamol worked just fine for the one dose he got, we stopped off at mcdonalds for lunch an hour after he came round, and he rode his bike down to school to collect his brothers a coupe of hours later. Good luck.

I was happy drugged, not under general. Did not feel a thing although I was slightly aware of the process. My nurse had me take 2 hydrococone before I went down. I had discomfort over the site for a few days, especially if I walked much. Not a big deal.

Oh, yes, my count was zero so they ran platelets through me the entire time, before, and after.

I was sore for a few days, it hurt to bend over and I'm sure if someone had slapped me on the rear, it would have hurt a lot. However, I was fine for work the following day.

I didn't have any meds for the procedure and didn't really think to take any afterwards.

It may be worse for a child since they aren't used to pain (like childbirth). Kids are tough but adults may be able to suck it up more, although Dougie did very well!

My little guy didn't complain at all afterward. He was not sent home with any pain relief and we didn't even give him Tylenol. He was below 5, they put a bandage on of coarse but when we changed it I was shocked how little blood there was... I didn't personally go through it, so I can't say it was a breeze but by the way he reacted it did seem to be pretty easy on him..

Hope all goes well, will be thinking about you

Thank you everyone. That makes me feel a bit better reading your replies. It seems really strange that there isn't loads of bleeding. Hannah had a blood test the other day and blood was dripping all down her arm from that so it would seem really strange then if the bone marrow biopsy didn't bleed loads. I will soon find out.

Sorry, I have another question. I wasn't expecting the haematologist to say that they would do a bone marrow biopsy so I wasn't prepared with questions to ask and now I have loads!

He said that Hannah was a really unusal case so he wanted to do a bone marrow biopsy to rule out other things that can look like ITP. Does anyone know what these things are?

My 3yr old just had a bone marrow biopsy last week. He didn't complain of pain at all and was playing around as soon as he came back to his room at the hospital. I was expecting him to be in pain, but instead he was very pleasant and very very hungry!
