Matix had his first "accident" while running through the house this weekend. He is normally pretty careful, but he is an 8 year old boy. He slipped and fell hitting the side of the table and fire proof safety box we have important papers in. He was already low on platelets...made this mama so scared! When I initially figured out what the loud boom was, I jerked him up off the floor to blood pouring out of his mouth. All I could think was "is there a head wound"...I am a nurse, but when it comes to your own kids sometimes you go a little bonkers. He was shaking all over and had the deer in the head lights look. Didn't even cry. I sat him down and cleaned up his lip, assessing his entire body. He already had petechiae, but now he had more where he hit his knee and chest also...and a big fat lip. I did not take him to the ER, just watched him. The bleeding stopped pretty soon after and he did not show any signs of altered mental status, headache, or nausea. This truly scared me to death, but I know this will probably happen again. It breaks my heart that this is just going to be how it is for a while. He has an appointment on Monday to begin Imuran or CellCept. I hope they stabilize his platelets without making him too terribly sick. I didn't call the doctor today because he seems fine. Still little bits of petechiae, but nothing like when he is at a "0". I never know if I am doing the right thing or not on this roller coaster called ITP. :(

A hug sent your way and kudos for keeping calm! Yay Mom! It is different nursing patients and very much like your head leaves when it is your child! So good job as a Mom, something we just don't hear often enough! And good wishes that the new treatment will help stablize him! Can only imagine how difficult.it is for those of you whose.kids are the ones with ITP!

I feel like it's always hard to know exactly what to do. Our Hem is 1 1/2 hours away so I try not to just jump in the car for every single nose bleed. Thanks for making me feel better.

My daughter had her first "crash and burn" last Thursday. She is 15, ITP for 2 1/2 years. Current Plt count of 10K x 3 weeks. She cut her L thumb while cutting a card board box with a utility knife. I too am a nurse and initially went into panic mode not sure if we would be able to control the bleeding. She and I both held pressure to the cut on the way to the ER. 10 stitches!! And, suprisingly very little bleeding after it was all said and done. WOW!! Good thing immature platelets are stickier than older/mature platelets!! Maybe we will not get so freaked out the next time. This was a good learning experience.

You certainly did the right thing. We have to trust our gut reactions!)

My first one happened last night! My 10 1/2 year old daughter fell out of bed (pred has been screwing with her sleep patterns and extremely overtired) and hit the corner of her bedside table. Questions running through our head, do we drive the 1hr to the hospital, are we over reacting, do we just monitor? We decided to watch and see. Ice and constant monitoring all night (I ended up sleeping with her to be sure).

I know when I email my Dr this morning, I'll probably get told off again, but at least she got a good night sleep cuddling with her Mum, and not stuck in the ER trying to explain to other Drs what is going on.
