Hi parents of little ones,
I am an adult with ITP & currently on pred.

This question is from a friend who has a 3 year old boy with a liver condition, currently tapering off pred. She asked me what he might be experiencing. Now 3 year old is a tough time any way :silly: so she doesn't know what is '3' behaviour or what can be attributed to the steroids! Although sympathetic, I didn't feel qualified to answer her & am hoping someone here may provide some advice of what their child experienced & how to manage.
Many thanks,
mj

Not positive about tapering..but when my 3 year old is ON pred, he can get angry, moody. Doesn't sleep well. Wants to eat everything. Seems to pee more often, also very thirsty. Wakes up many times a night for a drink when normally not at all. (his urine actually has a different smell, almost sweet) Yes I mentioned this to Dr. they suggested that could be normal and sugar levels (or something) change sometimes on steroids. Also, she may not notice this depending on blood work ordered for her son, but it affects his white cells.

For my son, it was typical withdrawal symptoms. Sweating, agitation, irritability and difficutly concentrating. It lasted through out the tapering and about a month after it seemed. It was not easy to discern ITP symptoms vs. prednisone vs. 3 year old behavior at times. :)

Thank you for your replies - I will pass them on.
All very well for me to have awful side effects but I wasn't going to assume similar for a 3 year old. Actually, what you described is typical but best heard from people affected directly.
