Hello all it's been awhile since I've posted. Kayla has Cronic ITP being diagnosed 4 years ago. Her platelets have stabilized at around 100k which we are VERY happy with. I posted before how I had eliminated Phalates, and BPA and that seemed to correlate with her rise in platelets.
Now for our current problem today is day 12 of stomach pain, throwing up, diarrhea and a very pale 11 year old girl. It seems to be worse with solid food. We have been to naturopath x2 and have another appointment tomorrow. On the first we did a blood draw to test for food allergy/sensitivities, we should get the results tomorrow. Kayla has had Stomach pain and vomiting off and on for years. At the end of January even she had a bout of 2 days, and there have been other times too I haven't tracked. Last Year in February she went 20 days (yes I said 20) during this bout her pediatrician kept insisting it was a virus and there was nothing to be done (that is why we are now seeing the naturopath).
I feel like I'm beating my head against the wall and here I still have a little girl in A LOT of pain. I would LOVE some insight or ideas, I am planning on bringing up ideas tomorrow. Enough is Enough we need to figure out what this is once and for all.
I am planning on asking about
Celiac (she has been tested for wheat sensitivity in the past and it came back negative)
H-Pylori (she has been tested 2x and both were negative)
Lupus?
Or?????????? I would love to pick your brain and hear your thoughts or experiences.
Thank you
Krissy

Hi Krissy,

In the natural realm, when we see this type of thing and nothing else is showing up medically, one would look at gluten and dairy. Both of those will cause vomiting, diarrhea, and painful, painful stomach aches.

I don't trust MD allergy tests and hopefully your ND ran the ELISA food allergy panel. That is a VERY accurate test. Our son tested negative for most food allergies on 7 (yes 7!) standard MD food allergy tests. When his ELISA came back it was 40 major food allergies and pulling them made him MUCH better. So hopefully your ND ran this test. But until you know what the latest test shows, since she's tested negative for gluten intolerance, I would pull the dairy. Which means no milk, cheese, yogurt, cream cheese, and sour cream. *Most* people that are dairy allergic can handle butter because it's fat vs. protein and carb (whey and casein). My son could not b/c he was so allergic. You just have to test that one out. It takes a full 30 days for dairy proteins to completely be processed out of the body but if dairy is the issue, you should know within 7 days or so as she will get progressively better when not eating it. Beware that nearly all boxed foods contain dairy (whey protein) so it means a non-processed food diet. But I would pin my bets on dairy first, gluten second.

If this comes back as not it, I have one other thought but want to reserve it until you've checked the food issue because it's more common.

Krissy,
Has she been tested for the Norovirus?
pacifica.patch.com/articles/super-bug-norovirus-invades-us-symptoms-appear-in-48-hours-df1a5609

It has been fairly epidemic around the country in the last year. People with compromised immune systems are more prone to it, and it can be difficult to eradicate it from all surfaces. I've known some people who have gotten it repeatedly. It is VERY painful and miserable-making!

Conventional medicine doesn't have anything got it (as it's a virus, antibiotics are useless. )
However, homeopathy has quite a few remedies that can relieve it fairly quickly. Not sure if your naturopath knows much about it or not, but its certainly worn exploring.

On another note, my daughter who had ITP at 12 (she's been in remission now for 8 1/2 years.), had a similar thing for a few years before getting ITP. After her diagnosis, it got more frequent and worse. She would have days where she would continually vomit and coils not eat or keep anything down. She had some pain, though I wouldn't say it was excruciating. It would usually last about a week. No one could figure out what was wrong with her. When she was diagnosed, I thought it was related to the ITP, but her doctors said "No, you'll need to take her to an internist."
Poor girl was so hungry, she used to draw bowls of food on paper. She was starving but couldn't eat. Since we were looking for a homeopathic remedy for her ITP, I was then working with a homeopath. He gave her homeopathic Sulphur and after that one dose, all of the nausea and vomitting stopped for good. Sulphur also brought her counts up to 140k, when they'd always been below 10k. It didn't keep them up for more than 3 weeks, but she has never had that nausea/vomiting stomach pain again. I later found a closer match of a remedy for her, Hepar Sulph, which has kept her in the high range of normal for 8+ years now. But, interestingly enough, "bilious vomiting " and "ferocious spleen" are both keynotes to it.

Hope you find an answer for her soon!

Norovirus is a good bet, it is going around like crazy, can last that long, and all you can do is try to keep the person from dehydrating. I thought they could test for it though?

I thought they could saliva swab for it but apparently not - diarrhea.emedtv.com/norovirus-gastroenteritis/norovirus-diagnosis.html

At best, stool identification is used when absolute diagnosis is needed (which they deem not often).

Erghhh the result didn't come in today. @ Patti I do believe it was the ELISA as there was a really large list of things to be tested. ND saw her again today and we did a blood draw for a CBC to check platelets (I'm not too concerned) and we're doing a "sample" and yes checking for Norovirus along with a few other things. So we wait and continue trying to keep food down her. I feel like I'm grasping at straws but am hopeful to get some answers, it can only be a matter a time before we figure this out.
Thank you for your thoughts and ideas not sure if this is related to her ITP or not but figured it couldn't hurt to ask such a supportive community.
Thank you!!!

Sometimes a bad stomach bug can give you a temporary lactose intolerance which makes it seem like the original illness goes on for a long time when it hasn't really - two of my kids had this as toddlers. It might be worth cutting out ALL milk products for a couple of weeks to see if that makes any difference - as Patti says though, you have to be very careful reading ingredient lists because milk is in an awful lot of foods that you would never guess!
