ITP and Low Hematocrit was created by cbbullard
Hello Everyone,

Our daughter was diagnosed in January with ITP. Her hematocrit has always been around 44, over the last few blood draws she's been 35, the latest draw she's 36. Her platelet count is staying pretty consistent at 20,000- 30,000 since she was diagnosed in early January.

My question- Is this common for her hematocrit to go down as well?

She is having a lot of fatigue (which her doctor said is not associated with the ITP). But after reading on here and other sites it seems to be common. She's also experienced some gum bleeding. Were now doing biweekly blood draws because her count is staying consistent. Which were glad, the phlebotomist is having a really hard time finding a vein. She also has Hirschsprung's Disease and I can't find any information on the web if this can play a role with ITP.

Thank You for any help!

ITP should not affect the hematocrit. Is her doctor concerned?

Have they tried the butterfly needle on your daughter? It is much smaller and causes less scar tissue. Hopefully, you'll be able to spread the CBC's out more in time, because it only gets worse as the time goes by.

The doctors seem to not be concerned with anything. The onc-hemo doctor and office just isn't that great with communication! I'm pretty sure they don't communicate at all! I'm thankful that our primary doctor is amazing!

They do use the butterfly needle, and they warm her arm which helps tons! A coombs test was ordered and that has come back neg! I'm still waiting since Wednesday to hear back from the hemo doctor, to find out what the next step is with her hematocrit.
