Treatment for my daughter at 3K platelets

Hi,
Just wondering if anyone else's doc has not treated their child if their platelets were at 3000. My doctor wants to re-test tomorrow. Everywhere I read, it seems that treatment is given if under 10K.
Your thoughts?

Hello,
Has your daughter ever tried treatment? Tomorrow might be above 10, I assume she doesn't have active bleeding? It is common not to treat numbers but treat symptoms.

Good luck

Hi, Thanks for responding. No, she hasn't had treatment before. But she had a high fever today, lots of petechia, a few nosebleeds....

My son was at zero and the doctor wouldn't treat. He wasn't having any bleeding so that was the reason for not treating. He tried the IVIG treatment once and it did not work.

Our hematologist treats Ryan when he is under 20K. He gets IVIG. Ryan is 5 (started when he was 4) and is an extremely active little boy, sometimes I wonder if thats why they treat even though others don't even treat until its under 10K

In the UK we don't generally treat kids for ITP based on counts alone, so unless there was bleeding (not just bruises and petechiae) my son could have any count from zero upwards and not get treatment. Its more important to look at symptoms than counts. I hope your daughter is a bit better now.

Also just a thought, when my son has bleeding episodes he takes prednisone, just for 3-5 days, with him it didn't help his count, but it did stop the bleeding. 18 months our plan stays the same we always have pred on hand just incase.

Hi -- we have both treated and not treated at 3K. My daughter doesn't bleed much and until recently (we are at about the one year mark) our hematologist was fine with letting her hover down in the single digits for a while. Now that some "magic" time marker has passed and it would appear my daughter is chronic, the hematologist is more anxsious to treat at single numbers -- even though she isn't bleeding. I think because she now believes this is not likely to resolve on its own. We typically give prednisone to give her a boost out of the "danger" zone. Everyone breathes easier when she is above 10K. We can live with that.

Good luck!

  • My son, Aaron, dx at age 5 (5/2001), though he was in remission for 5 years after a vaccine, came out of remission and lives at 3k. Did 5 years of treatment with but then stopped working, back at 3k. He is basically non responsive to all regular treatmen

My son was hanging at 7-10K all summer and we decided to treat with IVIG (only one week boost), prednisone and WinRho got nothing and now he is at 0 and has been hanging at 1 for the last 2 months. This is Aaron's 2nd bout with ITP and this time being almost 17, he is really struggling. I am wishing that I had just left him alone because now he is so sick. Don't know what is going on with him. I think a Internist is in our future. Don't think his new problems lately are ITP,but I could be wrong. Treatments only get more treatments. That's what I think. We are currently seeing a homeopath and trying to find a way to fix his whole body. Good luck. It's a hard choice but go with your gut and don't let the doctor force an issue.

Peg,
I'm so sorry to hear that Aaron's not doing well. I had been following your posts and wondered how he was doing. I thought he did Rituxan and am wondering how that went -- maybe he didn't do it or maybe it didn't work. So sorry.

I believe you live near Boston as do we. We used to work with a homeopathist in Watertown who was fabulous - and also with April on from this site - also fabulous.

I'm sorry to hear Aaron isn't doing well. Hoping you find out what else may be going on with him. Keep us posted if you wish.
Best wishes.
