Symptoms??? What symptoms has your child/teen had

My son has been diagnosed with ITP for over a year now.
He has had several IVIG treatments and is now being prescribed Prednisone. Due to IVIG not lasting more than a couple of weeks.

My questions are what symptoms have your child/teen complained about before and during ITP

My son has complained of being tired all the time,
Dizzyness
Weak/sore muscles
Joint Pain
troubles sleeping
low appetite


I have been told that none of these are symptoms of ITP, but I differ in opinion.

I am wondering if there are others that have the same symptoms. Also not before IVIG or prednisone were introduced, because that can cause side effects as well.

Please let me know your opinions/thoughts

Those are not typical ITP symptoms, no. They can be caused by treatments, but as you said, he had them prior to treatments. Many times there are other things that can cause symptoms but since we are only aware of the ITP, we tend to blame that. It could just be another level that is low, Like B-12 or something.

We havent had any treatments but my son is tired alot and complains of leg pain everyday. tonight for the first time my son went to his room while i was cooking dinner and went to sleep at 6:30. he is six years old he shoulnt be that tired. I bet when I take him to test tomorrow his platelets are very low.

Hi im new with this ITP and aslo after i had the first IVIG my body feels different , im so weak that sometimes i can't get up and i have to stay in bed,my primary care doctor told me that this is some side affects of the prednisone. i hope and wish your son gets better.

I think its really important NOT to assume that symptoms are because of ITP and get them checked out by your GP. My son has had a few of these in the three years since diagnosis, but I am not sure any of them are actually linked

being tired all the time - He is sometimes very fatigued, but I can't correlate it with his platelet count. However we found out by chance that he had some sort of a virus which affected his liver - since he recovered from that he seems to be a lot less tired.

Dizzyness - Again, sometimes - it generally seems to be because of low blood pressure. You might want to get your son's BP checked

Weak/sore muscles/Joint Pain - Again, sometimes, but then again, my other children without ITP have sometimes complain of this too. With my son, I think leg pain in particular is likely to be associated with his hypermobile joints rather than ITP.

troubles sleeping - never had this one, although if your son has aches and pains it might be connected with that

low appetite I think all kids go through phases of eating more or less (although unfortunately mine are all in the "eating me out of house and home" stage right now!). And I've got friends with children who don't have ITP but who always eat like sparrows.

The only other symptoms I think I've noticed is that when counts are below 10, he feels the cold a lot more - I have no idea why this would be, so maybe its just a coincidence!
