Hello,
My 5 year old daughter is going to a holiday club this week and each afternoon there is a sport activity. They are doing tag rugby, hockey and football and I've read lots saying that she shouldn't do these sports with a low count ( her count is 18)maybe I'm being stupid, but is it really that bad, would I be stupid to let her do it? What would you do?

Hi Grasshopper, going on what I have read on this site, a count above 30000 is cosidered to be in a safe zone and you can live a normal life. (ie including sport provided there is a low risk of a bump to the head).

With your daughter's count being around 18000 it's outside the considered guide lines, so I would suggest you talk to her Dr first.

We have twin grandchildren aged 5yrs so I realize how active they can be. No you are definately not being stupid by asking this question, you are obviously a caring Mum wanting the best for your child. This is good place to express any concerns and every one here has at some time expressed at least one of their concerns on this site to get feed back from other members.

Personally if it was my child with a count of 18k, I would not allow the activities as you mentioned!! I would not do it as an adult.

Hello,

Thank you for your replies. She hasn't done any of the sports this week so far as she has been too tired by the afternoon. I think I would have said no if I wasn't going to be there but I am in charge of her age group so would have been able to check what she was doing if she decided to do it.

Thank you for the list, I suppose what I am asking is should I be totally following it and is the problem with these sports just the risk of head injury?

If it were my kid, I would worry about any injury with these sports, but a head injury is of the greatest concern. A head injury can go unnoticed with an internal bleed that could be life threatning. I would play it on the safe side with counts at 18k. I just think it is not worth the risk. I know it is hard for kids to deal with and understand the risks with low counts. Hope she understands if you decide to keep her safe.
