Is it just me?

When Dougie went to the consultant two weeks ago, we both got a good telling off about some of the activity he does. This was followed up last week with a letter saying pretty much the same thing. Slapped wrists all round! When he was first diagnosed, I was very careful with him, so I've been wondering how we have got so careless recently, and feeling a bit guilty about it
.
I think the trouble is that I find it really difficult to think of Dougie as an "ill" person, mostly because he has so few symptoms - at a count of 12 he had very few petechaie on his legs and no bruising at all. He only gets any real symptoms these days with a count of around 5 or less. I think I've got complacent because he's been dealing with ITP for a while and nothing bad has ever really happened, and also because I can't actually SEE anything wrong these days - I am someone who needs to see physical evidence of something to believe in it. I don't think Dougie or his dad actually think anything would go wrong either.

Anyway, we are just going to have to reverse our decline into carelessness - I don't want any more telling offs! :P

I think we all tend to relax our restrictions after the initial shock has warn off. In your case with a teenage boy I can only imagine how challenging limiting his activities can be. I believe I remember you posting something about him doing things to prove he could (typical teen boy behavior):-) For us we have a young girl who looks to us still rather than challenge us. Thankfully nothing has happened, and we all continue to make the best decisions we can for our kiddo's.
Good luck

Thanks for the reply. Dougie's consultant is really very relaxed about restrictions (doesn't get excited about anything if he is above 20 or 30K), so for him to be so clearly disapproving about the things Dougie is doing has made me realise how lax we have become. As you say, its nearly impossible to stop him doing things, but maybe we should at least try and voice our disapproval more often. He is grounded at the moment, because I caught him 30ft up a tree at the weekend......

I've always been more restrictive, but I can understand where you're coming from. Tim is not really predictable, except that one thing I can predict is that he will bottom out, and he will do so very quickly if he doesn't get regular Nplate. Sometimes its not good to be right about something. But at least I know that much.

It is difficult to monitor active children for 'at risk behaviours; Niamh followed the watch and wait approach for 14 years, during that time she had an agreement with the Haemo about rollerblading , climbing, contact sports etc. To this day I do not know if she is not sporty because of the restrictions or if it is just the way she is. She also never had any problems with her ITP except a few nose bleeds and bruising at counts under 10. It is easy to forget the ITP when all appears well.
Swimming and dancing were the two safe activities which she took part in.

Nope its not just you- When my Abbys was Dx in June we where so careful- shes six so we even cut her popsicles off the stick- but we have bee getted loser inteh "do not do" area- started to let her swing a bit at home, go sleddign at home- its only with her twin sister, on a little slope in the back yard, it was too stressful and tiring always telling her no- she is still restriced when we leave the house though- we worry more about the accidents others can cause, than to herself- but it still is scary knowing that us "loseing our grip": can be very bad
