Sorry as the title says this question had far too much info but I have searched the internet and can't find an answer anywhere. Anyway, I have no idea how to recognise bleeding in a stool but I have just seen my daughters poo that is making me wonder. Basically she left a poo in the toilet without flushing and I've just seen it! The poo is very pale creamy brown colour but the toilet water arround it looks a red/orrange colour. I'm sure I'm probably worrying about nothing but does this sound like blood in her stool?

Blood mixed in the stool will usually make the stool black and tarry looking. Blood from a tear in the skin will usually leave what looks like blood in the toilet water. Generally pretty red, and looks like a lot of blood even if only a little. What you are describing sounds more like mucus. But - check it out as Melinda says!

When my boy was getting fissures (tears in the skin) this happened. Fissures are painful. You can ask if it hurt to go and that would help you figure out if this is a problem. My son described it as feeling like being cut by glass.

Most likely it is not anything. Just keep an eye on it. My daughters can be about any color. I blame it on the meds. She also has lots of loose, again issues with meds.

Our very patient and somewhat amused hematologist helped me with a bit of advice when I broached the poop subject with him, red on the poop that looks like blood is from further down in the intestines or from on the way out via anal fissures. Poop that looks black is from blood higher up in the digestive tract. When my daughter was diagnosed I went overboard with vegetables and fruits which colored her poop, then at Halloween she had too much candy with red food coloring and that made everything pink/red. Needless to say I felt like an idiot when having to ask about it.

A dangerous bleed is pretty easy to spot....pure blood. That's what Tim had, he had severe stomach cramps and was passing liquid (blood) stools.
