Iron deficiency anyone?

Iron deficiency anyone? was created by littletinkgirl
Wondering if anyone's children have been diagnosed with an iron deficiency in addition to ITP. Is there a connection? At Brooke's last count, her platelet levels were decent, but her iron levels (among a few other things) were down. We go Monday for a repeat test to see where everything is now. She's sick and has bruises, so I'm not expecting great news, but hoping it's not horrible. She has had many different odd diagnosis in the last 6 months in addition to her ITP, I just can't help but think it's all related. Just wondering what your experiences are.

Thanks all!!

Hi Madison, What reading is it that is low in relation to low iron count? Is it the Ferritin perhaps? Low ferritin indicates low iron stores. My ferritin levels have been low since diagnosed with ITP, requiring iron tranfusions 3 times. From what I understand there are quite a few types of anaemia, mine is just one of them.

I hope you get good results for Brooke's tests on Monday. :)

I know this thread is in the Parents section, but wanted to reply anyway. I'm 45 and do have anemia with the ITP. All of my counts are off too not just the platelets. My doc put me on iron supplements of 10gr per day. It's better, but still not "normal". He doesn't seem to worried about it though.

My son has been anemic since his ITP diagnosis too. None of his counts are ever normal, and it frustrates me to no end. i wanna know what's truly going on. Keep in touch maybe we can learn off of each others experiences.

There are several types of iron deficiencies. What is low? It is not ITP-related unless the anemia was caused by bleeding. I also have low ferritin, but have not been anemic.

Anemia can be caused by low ferritin, low B-12, Autoimmune Hemolytic Anemia, Evans Syndrome, etc.

Funny how each topic you look and and say Hey me to.

My hemo has had me on 60 mg of Iron a day for over a year now and my iron levels are still low.

My regular doctor and hemo are at odds as to if the Slow FE Iron or regular Iron pills are better.
The Regular doctor says that recent test show that the slow release is ineffective unless it releases the iron at the exact moment it needs to in your body to be dispersed and chances are pretty slim.

I tolerate both with no side effects so I tend to switch between the two.

It sounds like this is another side effect of the low platelets.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Brooke's last labs showed her hemoglobin, hematocrit, red cell dist, and mean platelet volume were all low. The dr. didn't give me any more info as far as her iron levels is concerned. He said iron deficiency and that he wants to see what tomorrow's labs show before doing anything else. I suspect that tomorrow will give us a better picture as to what else is going on. I know one thing for sure---she is one CRANKY little girl today!!!!

Thanks again all!!!

I don't know about my anemia before ITP. I have test result from 2006 that show my hgb was normal and my platelet count was low at 114. The doctor didn't say anything at that time so I guess it was no concern to him cuz he didn't test again. I have numbers all over the place! Some are low...and some are really high. I'm still in the process of learning/remembering what they are all! I'm also interested in the outcome of the results tomorrow.

Tim doesn't have that problem, but one of his pet peves is that when he tells someone he has ITP, they always ask him, "how do you treat that? Do you take extra Iron?" It drives him mad, lol.

WinRho may cause anemia. When Wesley was getting WinRho every 2-3 weeks we really had to watch his hemaglobin. Once, after a WinRho and a really bad nose bleed he got really anemic. He had to take iron for a few weeks an we had to use IVIG instead of WinRho until his labs got better.

My ITP daughter often has anemia, but so do I so I never thought much about it. I was severely anemic during pregnancies and finally in the last pregnancy learned there's right and wrong ways to take iron supplements. Apparently calcium binds to iron and it just passes through the system, so no dairy foods near a supplement! I think vitamin C helps absorption, i.e OJ. There's two types of iron in food - heme iron (meat) and non-heme iron (spinach type foods). It is harder to digest the non-heme iron and the iron absorption is greatly improved if you eat it with heme iron, i.e. meat. So have some steak or burger with that spinach salad. Unfortunately, I think tea is bad for iron, which is my main staple drink these days.

Yeah, when you take iron you should take it with food, and its good to take it with a vit. C and also a vit B-12 as well. I've never been a big Vit. taker, but recently have started taking a multivitamin with iron as well as D3 2000 iu, b12 1000 mics, C 1000mg, and a joint complex vitamin as well (cause I'm getting old, lol). My doctor thinks its a great idea. My energy level has gone way up since I started taking the vits, and my hair and nails are much healthier to boot. I never was tested, but I thought I was anemic based on symptoms. Without C and B-12 the body cannot absorb iron, so that's why I started taking those vits. It helped very quickly.

My son Zach, has some issues with his iron levels. His ferretin levels need to be monitored because along with his ITP, he also has Ulcerative Colitis. Not sure if the low levels are due to the ITP or UC.
