Hi all! My son Chance now 6 years old was dx back in July 2008 with ITP orginial count estimated at <1k. At the time we were living in Italy and under went multiple tx to include ivig and winrho prior to coming back to the states. Each time counts would climb in the 100k range but within days fall back to 20k or so. We delt with this for about a year then after him getting sick and counts jumping to 400k they normalized. Things went really well and I had finally began to just accept that sometimes a bruise is just a bruise. My dh deployed in february and I will tell you everything that could go wrong has. Wednesday night Chance began to run a high fever, vomitting and crying his side hurt. Early thrusday am we went to the ER only to discover hours later that he was suffering from an acute appendicitis. We were talking with the surgeons about the procedure and I happen to meantion that he had a hx of ITP however things had gone so well over the last year or so I had not even ask what his count was at this time. They said they were sure it was okay but would double check. Within 15 mins they were back asking what his last count had been, late 2010 it had been 256k today it was only 52k. At that point the decision was made to transport him to the children's hospital where they had platelets incase he needed them. Once we got there the hemotologist felt it was best we give him a tx of ivig follow by a big dose of solumedrol to see if we could get counts up. They did not respond right away and the fear was that his appendic was going to rupture so they finished the quick infusion of the ivig follow by giving him platelets in the or to control the risk of bleeding. His counts have slow come up and yesterday we allowed to come home and the count was a good 176k We are hoping that this was just an acute relapse due to the appendic but will be following back up to see what happens with counts. So its a little scary to think about going back down this road especially with my husband gone but I guess at least this time we know a little more about it. I'm wondering if anyone else has had a similar expereince. It was a little shocking to us because our hemo had told us the likelyhood of this happening again was very slim yet here we are.
