Do your children have a medical bracelet? My daughter will be starting school soon and she is already going to lots of friends houses and in their cars on her own and I'm wondering if it's a good idea for her to have a medical bracelet?

If your child has got one, what do you have written on it? I was thinking something like 'ITP - Low platelet count. No aspirin or ibruprofen' Do you also have something that non medical people will understand explaining to be careful of head injuries or something?

Yes, my son wears a medical id band - it makes me feel safer about him. I got a couple from this shop.

They have some really nice ones for kids, and they seem to wear really well. You can write in yourself. Dougie's says ITP - low platelets, along with our mobile numbers and the number for the hospital.

Since you haven't received many replies, I wanted to mention that this has been discussed before, so if you search the archives you will probably find additional opinions/responses.

My son had a medical i.d. bracelet when he was much younger, and it made me feel more secure. I looked for the bracelet and can't find it, but I think we just had "ITP - low platelets, bleeding risk" and our phone numbers. We ordered the bracelet from www.n-styleid.com/ and Brady really liked it. He didn't wear it much because he is super-sensitive to having anything around his wrists. I remember when we ordered it that there are some places where you pay a monthly/yearly fee and they keep all of your data on file so that emergency personnel can get complete information when they call the toll-free number. We didn't go that route because he was in our care or the care of the school or good friends/family when he was younger.

Anyway - now his counts have stabilized somewhat but your post has me thinking about a medical bracelet again. As they get older, they're away from you more and more, so it's probably a good safety measure.

Good luck!

Beth - mom to Brady (age 19, diagnosed 1/18/02) and Matthew (age 21)

I was reading it doesnt just have to be a bracelet, it can be like a dog tag type of necklace too that could be worn under shirts as well

Since I acquired ITP I decided it was time for an medical ID bracelet. I ordered my first one from Laura's Hope which I found on this website. It is beautiful and looks like a piece of jewelry rather than an ID bracelet. The quality is excellent and there was plenty of space on the ID tag for the printed information that includes my full name, 2 medical problems, and 2 contact phone numbers. You can mix up the info however you want too.

For my son, I ordered a bracelet off of creativemedicalid.com. They offer funky styles that make it a little less obvious that it's a medical ID bracelet but certainly obvious enough with a red medical insignia on the tag. For the text I added my son's first name, my name and cell phone number and "ITP-severely low platelets" on the front and at that website, you can add text to both sides of the metal tag so on the back I added "call 911 if severely injured or bleeding".

The camo print helps to make him feel it a cooler band than a bulky silver chain one. I will say the engraving is probably better on the silver chain ones but so far this has been fine.

Good luck :)
