We are going through so many symptoms I am starting to get confused about what could possibly be something with ITP or if it is something else that I need to call my normal ped with.

I have called the pediatrician but in the mean time I am going to ask the forum... I have gotten some really good help so far...

Last night my son starting having diarrhea again (after going through it for a month in January) but this time it smells worst than it did in Jan and at that time I thought it could not get worst than that. This time, however, there is a substantial amount of mucus in his stool. I talked to the hematologist this morning and he says it is not a side effect of the IVIg. When I called his pediatrician they do not realize all the other medical things we go through and say that it is nothing. I am so confused. I really do not think that this is something to do with ITP but I have to ask, has anyone dealt with GI issues before? He is 23 months so he can not tell me if his tummy hurts or anything, but he is sleeping on his knees so I am thinking it is.

Mother of Maebree 4 and Chaece 23 months.

My daughter battles an upset stomach a lot. She rarely has formed bowl movements. I am not sure why but I have never concerned myself since it has become the norm. I figured it is either her system or the meds she is on.

For both of you moms - both symptoms you are describing (mucous and unformed stools) are symptoms of food allergies. In light of doctors not being able to pinpoint other causes, you may want to look into this. The biggest culprits are dairy and gluten. The loose stools also go with poor digestion/absorption which is caused by food allergies. I would highly recommend you use a GOOD digestive enzyme with each meal (you can open capsules or crush pills into applesauce). You might do a test run of pulling dairy for 30 days and see if you notice a difference and then pulling gluten for 30 days. An ELISA test is helpful but expensive and elimination is the cheapest way to figure it out. Dairy and gluten both hide in foods so you have to read labels well. Casein and whey are other names to look for that are dairy.

Food allergies are related to ITP in the sense that they are immune responses. Since most of the immune system resides in the gut it is not uncommon to have food allergies along with other AI diseases. The underlying fix must be the gut before other parts of the immune system will heal.
