Hi everyone,
Has anyone had to give amicar to their kids to help stop bleeding? My 9 year old daughter has a very loose tooth. She actually hasn't lost a tooth since her diagnosis with ITP, but she lost 8 other teeth earlier in her life before her platelet counts started to drop. We are now at about 20,000 and she is also not taking any treatments for her ITP -- we are watching and waiting.

Her tooth/gums have been bleeding non-stop for several hours. The hematologist on call this evening suggested amicar to help stop the bleeding. She took it late this evening once we were able to locate it at a pharmacy. It was either do this or go the ER, and they suggested we give this a try.

Tomorrow we call the dentist and hopefully they can remove the bothersome tooth without any trouble!

I took amicar while getting my wisdom teeth out, and it helped a bunch. Only took around two days before I stopped needing any gauze at all, which is pretty quick.

How is the bleeding now? Is she better?

Hi,
We took 1 additional dose before she had her loose tooth removed (about 1 hour before), and another dose 6 hours after that. She did great, and the bleeding stopped -- thank goodness.

The dentist also recommended that we try moist tea bags if we saw additional bleeding. They don't know why, but there is some properties in tea that helps with coagulation for oral bleeding (i.e. gums, teeth, etc.). We will certainly try to remember that for the next time!

She had no other bleeding yesterday afternoon or evening, and we have not gotten any calls from school yet, so that must be a good sign!

The caffeine in the tea is a vasoconstrictor, which would help stop bleeding. The tannin does something, too, which I don't recall. The teabags helped my kid after tooth extractions. We picked up $200 worth of Amicar (insurance wouldn't cover), only to realize we ought to remind the doc she was on bc pills to prevent monthly bleeding, and ask if that was too much clot risk. Turned out, the doc didn't like the thought of Amicar in a patient on bc pills, due to too much risk of a dangerous clot. $200 worth of Amicar sat in the cabinet in case it was really needed enough to withstand the risk. Then it was trashed when it expired. Oh well -- live and learn.
