Wondering if anyone elses children have had the same problems. Dale has had problems with low iron as well as platelets. wondering if there is a link between the two. His hemo seems to just brush my questions aside because his counts have been quite good lately (102). Have had nothing below 20 for a year(touch wood). He has had a bone marrow biopsy which came back all clear. I'm at ends trying to help my son coping with his mood swings which can get quite aggressive at times. He nearly 4 and has been had pred for over 12 months.

Worried tired mum.

The only link is again, more autoimmune problems. There is a disorder called Evans Syndrome that includes both low platelets and low iron. I'm not saying your son has it, because I'm sure his hemo would be concerned if he suspected it. It could just be normal low iron for no good reason. Has he had to treat it? If not, I wouldn't worry about it.

This has nothing to do with your question...just a funny anticdote. When my son tells people he has low platelets (ITP, they always ask, "Do you take iron for that?" It REALLY annoys him, lol.

I would like to mention that when my platelets would drop to 1000, my hemoglobin and iron level also dropped with my platelets. The doctors were worried that I would become anemic. But, as my platelets started to rise, my iron and hemoglobin also started to rise and became normal. I do think there is a link--also my hemo thinks there is a link as far as I am concerned.

Just wanted to share my thoughts on the subject.:)
