My 18 month old son diagnosed with ITP....nervous mommy!!

So I'm sure this type of story has been posted many times before but I'm just so scared. My son who is currently 18 months old was officially diagnosed with ITP last week. We have been battling low platelets for 5 weeks now. Originally he was at 15,000 back on 1/15. He finally increased to about 123,000 on 2/2 but after a routine recheck 10 days later discovered his numbers dropped to 49,000 and continued to decrease over the course of a few days. Finally on Friday 2/17 his count was at 60,000. On 2/15 he started to show systemic symptoms of bruises all over his body. He even was at a point where is ANC was 0.07 but that quickly recovered to normal. All his numbers just keep bouncing all over the place where one time it's high next it's low. I just don't understand. Now I know the doctors keep telling me he just had a bad viral illness and that was the cause......but that was in early January! I continue to be frustrated and scared because of his risk for bleeding it's making me a nervous reck! I mean how can I keep a 1 1/2 year old from running jumping and playing!! My dad was doing research and found that ITP is a side effect after recieving the MMR vaccine which he did receive on 9/29/16. I guess I'm just looking for support and know that other people are out there and we can get through this!! Thanks!

I'm sure someone more qualified than I will address your situation soon. Just a couple of comments.
As I understand, any flu virus can give anyone ITP. Similarly, any flu vaccine can give anyone ITP. Also, a large segment of the population has a genetic predisposition to get any of the auto immune diseases, like ITP or Rheumatoid Arthritis.
The best thing going for you son is that he is a child. I don't remember the exact numbers, but because he is a child his odds are very good. It is something like 60 or 80% of children get over ITP in less than 6 months.

Most children have acute ITP and do recover within a year. I understand how scared you are. Take one day at a time. Symptoms are more important than counts, so focus on that instead of the numbers. A count above 50k should be safe for most activities. The fact that he bouncing around on his own is a good thing; at least the counts are not chronically low. He does seem to rebound at times. Yes, vaccines are known to trigger ITP and it's possible that he had this for a while but you just didn't know it. Keep us updated and hang in there.

You are not alone and I just went out and spent over 300 bucks at an attempt to provide a safe bump free environment for my 18 month old whose been diagnosed with ITP two days ago. I can't stop crying and he won't stop jumping and running and being a kid.
