My daughter was diagnosed with ITP a month ago when she was 7months old. Her platelets were at 9 when we got to the hospital. She recieved IVIG and her platelets went up to 46 the following day. A week after the treatment they were at 133. Now it's been a month and they are back at 9. She is scheduled to have IVIG again tomorrow, and I'm just not sure about giving her that treatment again since she's only 8 months. I just want to hear people's experiences with infants with ITP and the side effects of IVIG. I wish my doctor would just wait and see what happens instead of suggesting IVIG again after she only had it a month ago. I've been worried sick and just want her levels to be normal.

Griggs:

I can't imagine how hard it would be to have child so young go through this. The good news is that most of the time for children, ITP is acute. It can occur after an illness or vaccine and sometimes resolves after a few months.

How are her symptoms when counts are down? Waiting it out without treatment is a viable option if symptoms are not too bad. As far as treatments, IVIG usually doesn't last long, but it probably is the most benign treatment there is for ITP. The other treatments might be too harsh since she is so young. You can discuss watching and waiting with your doctor if you are comfortable with that.

Thank you for responding! When she was first diagnosed and her platelets were at nine, she only had petechia. And yesterday when her platelets were at nine again, we only noticed petechia, no bleeding whatsoever. So I'm assuming that those symptoms aren't too bad, I hope. I'll defiantly be talking to her doctor about watching and waiting.

No, petechiae isn't too bad unless they keep increasing in number. There are several articles about watching and waiting for children. I can post them if you want to see them.
