Good Morning,

My daughter (6) was recently diagonosed with ITP. We were admitted to the hospital when he platelets were 2 - had IVIG and they skyrocketed to 558 - they are falling weekly (558-200-116-68 as of yesterday), and I have a sneaky feeling next week they will be low again. The doctor has advised no recess or gym.

My question is, when do you keep them off from school? I trust her class room (her friends know what is up) it's the older kids I don't trust to bump or anything.

Maybe because the diagnoses is so fresh Im worrying a bit more.

I have never kept my son home on the basis of his count. His normal range is 10-20ish. If he is below about 10, i would send him in with a note that he isnt to do contact sports - he takes no notice though! Its best to keep things as normal as possible :)

HI, don't think that you are worrying more, you have all reasons to be concerned. My 9 year old son has acute ITP and currently his platelet count is 8 and he is home with me this week until we get his next check. Id never forgive myself if I sent him while his count is so low and he gets a knock to the head or stomach etc and he died or ended up having a stroke. I just cant send him, if his count is above 10 im more than happy to send him off to school. Its a tough one for all of us parents.

Hi there,

My son and I have just been to see his pediatrician and have the all clear for him to go back to school, no playing on the playground or playing contact sports. So tomorrow its back to trying to get on with life as normal yeehaa ( NOT! )
