10 Month old with ITP... was created by smiller1802
Hello, I am very new to all of this. On Feb 8, my 10 month old daughter woke up with a bruise on her knee and another on her thigh. We honestly did not think much of it because she is crawling all over and trying to take steps. We figured the bruises were from that. That same day, after her nap, she wokle up with a petechiae rash on her right arm. At that point I began to panic and we took her to the emergency room. While there she bumped her cheek on her stroller and it bruised immediately.

Her first CBC showed a platelet count of 3k! We were rushed to a childrens hospital that had a pediatric hematologist/oncologist. They redid her blood there and her counts were at a 2k. all her other levels were normal and she was diagnosed with ITP. They began her first IVIG on Friday night. After 12 hours, her platelets were at 26k. They did a sencond IVIG and after the next 12 hour dosage, her counts were up to 119k. We were released from the hospital on Monday the 11. We were ordered to follow up with her pediatrician one week later for another CBC. That was yesterday and they just called to tell me her platelet count is at 600k!! Is this normal, for it to go so high in one week? Now its above the normal range. The pediatrician said it was great and he was very happy, but I wanted to ask some input from others who are going through this. Thank you. Sorry this got so long.

My son is 2 yrs old now and ITP was found at 9 months old. His has stayed around 20K consistently without treatment. He doesn't have bleeding symptoms so the dr's say to wait and watch. I feel lost about this as well. We actually had a CT scan today because he bumped his head (without us even knowing it) and developed a soft bump on his head. The scan came back ok with no skull fracture or anything so we're glad about that. Definitely wish the platelets would go back to a normal level. Had a bone marrow biopsy last September which shows no other problems. He does test positive for antiphospholipid antibodies which (to my understanding) helps with clotting so that's why he has no bleeding symptoms.

I'm so glad that your daughter's has gone back to a high number! I'd love to keep in touch with you. I can't find anyone to talk to with a child who has ITP. :(

My 5 1/2 year old was diagnosed in January 2012. From January - July, he had IVIG every 4 weeks. His last IVIG being in July 2012. He stayed in the 30-60 range until this month, he dipped to 16. Since we've been at this for so long, we all decided to just wait and see what happens... not to treat. This was about 3 weeks ago. He's had weekly CBCs, the next being 20k, and the most recent being 30k.

There are many ups and downs, at least in our case. Good luck!
