Green Stool??? was created by kfilosa
I am new to this support group. My daughter was diagnosed with ITP last August Her counts have been a roller coaster for the past year. She is holding out at 42,000 right now (after IVIG she usually shoots up to 400,000 then steadily cuts in half every week until she is back down to 10 or so, then we do the IVIG again.) She has now developed a new symptom, green stools. We have ruled out her diet, nothing green and leafy there, and her iron intake is not over the top. Does anyone know, or have this symptom? We're dealing with her easily getting dehydrated and migraines, on top of the bruising. She does not go back to the hematologist until October. Thanks in advance if anyone has any idea IF this is even a symptom.

It means the faeces are moving through the system too quickly. They start off green and should change colour so your daughter's is rushing through. Maybe seek advice from another specialist, the haematologist won't know.

Food dyes and Iron supplements can also cause this. I have experienced this and feel it was due to a food dye.

Thanks for the suggestions... we have ruled out anything that was ingested (specific foods, dyes, etc.) It's been going on for a week and her hemonc. dr. told us it could be an abnormal production of bilirubin since it has been going on for over a week and her diet has consisted of chicken, rice, apples, and cereal. I guess we'll be back at the dr. to check this out! Heading there this afternoon so maybe we'll have an answer of some sort. The good news is that her ANA came back and she is Lupus free. Thanks again for the possible problems.

When my kids were little, green stools usually indicated gastro infection.

She has since passed through the "green stool" phase and is now working on migraines. Her dr. told her she most likely has early onset migraines (which will only get worse once she hits puberty) Since she is 9, that may happen sooner than later!
Her counts are starting to drop. For some strange reason, headaches are always a trigger for her platelets to start dropping again. Her dr. does not think it is related, but oddly, it happens right as her counts hit the 40,000 mark, then steadily go downhill from there.

The COOL thing is that her older sisters alerted their high school and a lot of the kids wore purple to school on Friday!
Thanks for asking!

Has she been tested for antiphospholipid syndrome (APS)? It often goes with ITP and headaches in childhood are also an early sign.
