After dealing with adult chronic ITP myself for over 16 years now and an old reg on the forums I was devastated this week to end up in hospital with my 4 year old son with a count of just 3 :-( I am glad to know the forum is here but not so happy to be back again nor in this section, We are in watch and wait mode after 3 nights in hospital so docs could monitor him. We left with a count of 6 and go back on Friday for bloods. I want to get off this roller coaster before it begins

It must be so hard to deal with a child with ITP, I think we can deal with it when we have but hate to see our children with anything wrong, hopefully it will just be this one time and he will not have to deal with this long term.
Thoughts are with you!

Oh god we have just been through the scariest week. After heading off for follow up bloods for my son a week after discharge his counts dropped back down to 2. We had 3 more days of watch and wait in hospital until his nose started to bleed and then by the evening he had vomited blood 4 t times all old until he started to vomit fresh blood and was so weak. His haemoglobin dropped and they ordered immediate transportation to the childrens hospital 3 hours away. He was given transomenic acid to stop the bleeding and finally ivig transfusions. His count fluctulatedbetween 3- 15000 then dropped again to 6000 before finally up to 76000 before we were discharged. Even going through my husband dying of cancer 6 months ago I have never been so terrified. I also feel an enormous amount of guilt feeling I Had passed itp on to him. The haemo however said she had 8 cases in 10 days and beleives that a virus that had been travelling around was responsible. I do hope it was an acute episode and does not become chronic for him.

That must have been a horrible week - I bet you are glad that it is over for now .

I just wanted to say that you shouldn't feel at all guilty about your son's ITP. My son's heamatologist has a theory about viruses which sounds very similar to the comment yours made. And even if it were true and you could prove it, it doesn't actually change a thing, so what is the point in beating yourself around the head about it?

Most kids do get over ITP quite quickly and most of the rest live with it without major problems. Fingers crossed that your son falls into one of those categories.

Sorry to hear what you have been going through!! DO NOT feel guilty for passing this on to your son!! To my knowledge it is not considered an inherited disorder. There are so many things that can trigger this disorder. Personally I feel my case was due to a virus. May be an acute case and he will pull out of it.
Prayers are with you!!
