Paranoid???? was created by bell1138
My 6 year old daughter had ivig 4 weeks ago because her platelets dropped to 3,000. Two weeks ago we had a follow up with her hematologist and she had a platelet count of 564,000. Today I noticed she had a few bruises on her legs and she had a red dot in her mouth. The reason I'm paranoid is because the previous time I noticed a bunch of red patches all over the inside of her mouth. When I asked her she said she bit the side of we cheeck while eating. Am I being paranoid or could her platelets have dropped so rapidly in 2 weeks? I would greatly appreciate any input. I'm going crazy. I will be taking her to the doctor tomorrow regardless. Does anyone know how fast the platelets can drop. Two weeks ago 564,000 and today ???

Im still new at this, but mine went from 5000 to 319000 after 4 days of IVIG. One week later it was down to 90000. The second week it was back down to 5000.

Yes, they can drop that fast with IVIG. It usually doesn't last very long. Let us know how it goes tomorrow!

Thank you so much for your quick response it really means a lot. I know they could drop fast , but from such a high platelet number 2 weeks ago (564,000). Could they drop so drastically that she would be lower than 10,000 or so? This is so fustrating and nerve recking. I really appreciate everyone's input.

I've never had a count as high as 564 but I did go from 202 to 1 in a week after taking dexamethasone. Looking at my records I also see that I went from 168 to 2 in a week in the early days of using Nplate.

So yes, anything is possible but if your child doesn't have any frank bleeding, say in the urine or something like that then don't worry.

Just got back from te doctor. He platelet count is 130,000. It's under normal. Now it's just wait and see what it is going to do. This is so stressful. Not knowing is te worse part. Constant worrying about what is going to happen.

Just take things a day at a time. Her count is very safe today, so feel secure in the moment and go with that.

Thank you Sandi. I am just worried because they dropped from 564,000 to 130,000 which is under the norm range. I just pray and hope they don't continue to drop. This is so stressful, I really appreciate your reply..

Bell:

They might, and probably will drop again. It's okay. Just because they drop does not mean that anything bad will happen. You'll deal with it. Children and adults do survive low counts all the time....it's just part of ITP. Try to roll with it as much as you can. Be cautious, but try to stop panicking.
