20 year old son just diagnosed

My son was just diagnosed with ITP 2 days ago. He had a count of 1 (Yes, 1) and was rushed by ambulance to the cancer center in KC, MO. We are new to all of this. He is military reserve and had vaccines 10 months ago at basic training. Does anyone know if there is a correlation? He is certain that he did not get the quinine vaccine for those deploying, but he did receive the MMR.

I appreciate any information that you can give. Pretty dang scary!

When my daughter was diag back in feb she was at 2 and we had to rush to our children's hospital for treatment. From what I have been told any illness or vaccines can potentially cause ITP, but they don't know the how or why. (Emma had a flu shot back in Nov not sure if that was it or just from a cold she had). When they are diag it is a very scary situation but do your research and read a lot of these posts. They have a ton of information and you can see even at 1 there are many treatments avaliable. Good luck & hopefully he recovers quickly.

ITP can be a consequence of immunizations, yes. It is a listed side effect for a few of them, especially the MMR. There is no way to prove it or counter-act it though.

I know this all seems scary right now, but very few people die from ITP even when counts are low. How were his symptoms? Any active bleeding? Most people with ITP can handle low counts fairly well, but everyone is different.

Hopefully he will respond to treatments. What have they done?
