I got my daughters blood test back this week and the pathologist noted that "rare giant platelets were seen" Has anyone heard of this?? From the research that I found online looks like it is found in some cases of ITP but could also be releated to possible genetic issues.

Yep!

I have giant platelets.

I read somewhere that this may be a trait of people with ITP, along with having platelets that are extra sticky - sort of compensates for a low count: "quality" not quantity. These big platelets can sometimes throw off the platelet counting mechanism - the machine doesn't recognize them as platelets.

This is really weird disorder!

So is it more something that can just happen or she just had it and we just know about it now because of the constant blood tests?

In platelet talk there seems to be a difference between large and giant platelets and ITP people should have large platelets and not giant ones or so I was told, although the odd few is neither here nor there.

Google for giant platelet syndrome to find out about it.

Bernard-Soulier Syndrome is an autosomal recessive inherited disease (both parents must carry the genetic trait) caused by a defect in platelet glycoprotein complex 1b-IX-V. In addition to thrombocytopenia, people with Bernard-Soulier Syndrome have very large platelets and platelet function defects that prompt much more bleeding at a particular platelet count than people with ITP.
