Summer Vacation, Here I come!

Well, the new tent has been ordered and should be here next week. I'm so excited!!! We haven't been camping since I was pregnant with Daniel four years ago. The tent we had then was terribly leaky. We ended up having to leave the camp site and head to a B&B because the bottom of the tent had turned into a lake and the rain was dripping on my leg... It has sense been demoted to the kids summer playhouse, which they think is fabulous.

So, now that I have my monsoon-proof tent on the way I'm itching to pack up the truck and take off for the weekend! I think we're going to spend the entire summer camping. It's going to be fantastic!!!

Does anyone have an "I never go on a camping trip without it!" item that they suggest I throw in the truck?

Diet pop? I'll take the full sugared version, please. It just means I can't drink as much, and that's a good thing!

An electric heater or hot water bottle for camping! We went for the first time a couple of yr ago. It was so so so so cold by 5pm! lovely in the sun but i ended up having to go to the camp toilet to warm up cos it had a radiator bbrrrrr it was april though. One of my dogs stayed inside the sleeping bag and stuck to me we were both shivvering.

My "can't do without" item: a hotel room! Twenty years ago, hubby and I had a delightful camping trip in the Blue Ridge until one night where it just seemed nothing was going right. It was off season, and the camping area was deserted except for us and the very strange family managing it. We kept hearing noises from a nearby abandoned shack. We got spooked, decided to sleep with our shoes on ("just in case"), and then decided, who were we kidding, there would be no sleep under these circumstances. We packed up, found a budget hotel, enjoyed some hot showers, good mattress, and cable TV, and never looked back. (Of course, as we drove off, we realized there was a pay phone on the other side of the shack. The locals had been walking down there all night to use the "community phone." These were the pre-cell phone years.) I love the outdoors, and don't mind a cabin without all the modern luxuries (no tv is great by me), but my back and I have decided I am not a camper and must have a real bed. Hope you and your family have a great time getting away from it all.

Norma: You're hilarious! Can't do without a hotel room... Ha! Ha! I understand your need for "lurury". After a week in the bush I'll be due for some pampering too! But, our new tent is really a portable hotel - it's HUMONGOUS. We also have a fantastic air mattress. It's better than any hotel bed I've ever slept on, so that makes things much more comfy.

Cindy: Steve is a bad with his camera as I am with my notepad and pen. He doesn't leave the house without it and all the paraphernalia that goes with it. I think the camera gear takes up more space than the kids do!

I seriously don't understand why anyone would willingly go camping.

I do it once a year for a festival. This year, same as last, doing the Latitude Festival.. music, comedy and literature stuff. Nobody else will go with me so I go with my adult son and sharing a small tent with him is an experience. We do pay a bit more to use the upmarket field.. LOL.. with better loos that don't stink quite as much by the end of the weekend. I think I'm looking forward to it!

It's not that bad! We use the National and Provincial Parks, so the grounds and facilities are maintained very well. I remember a couple of years ago I was pregnant with my youngest and made my poor husband go to two or three different parks before I was satisfied with the washroom facilities. Knowing I was going to have to get up at least once during the night to pee, there were some places I refused to stay! "Toilets that flush" are on the top of my list of "must have" items! I am so thankful I have boys that can stand to pee...
