Port and lemon??

Ann mentioned drinking port and lemon on another thread. Is that a common drink in England? I never heard of it. Is it just port with a slice of lemon? I know in England you can also get mixed beer drinks (shandies?) like beer and lemonade, we don't have that in the US. I like port and like to try new drinks.

There is one mixed beer drink you can get here in some Mexican restaurants, it is called a michelada (or something like that?) and it's beer mixed with hot sauce. Then there is a depth charge, which is beer with a shot glass full of whiskey dropped into it - watch your teeth.

Port and lemon is made with one part port and two parts lemonade.. that is British fizzy lemonade which doesn't taste of lemons. It's not a particularly popular drink, probably a bit old fashioned now but a few of us drank it in a certain pub when I was about 17. I think we must have taken to it because it was very cheap. Some say it's an old woman's drink but that didn't bother us. Nowadays in summer I much prefer Pimms and lemonade. Do you know Pimms?

Shandy is usually made with bitter with a splash of lemonade. Bitter is a heavy sort of beer. I'm not sure you ever have that in the US. I don't think the lighter lager beer would go well with lemonade. We tend to drink that with a splash of lime cordial in it.. lager and lime is lovely.

Can't do whiskey, or whisky for that matter, so I'll pass on the depth charge. Gin is my spirit of choice.

We have Lager Shandy in the North of England. Our Ang loves Pimms but i haven't tried it i love a glass of Brandy with Ginger Ale or Whisky with coke. Not very often but its lovely. Never tried Port & lemon, i thought it was an old ladys drink too, like a snowball or gin. Peter is a Whisky conesour, he loves Jack Daniels and Scotish malts, he would say the beer is spoiling the depth charge.
Enjoy experimenting anyway

Ann,
When you say British fizzy lemonade, that's like our Sprite or 7Up, isn't it? More like a carbonated soft drink than a squeezed Southern USA lemonade. Port and lemon sounds a bit like our wine spritzers, which is how we South Carolina girls eased into drinking at 17 or 18 years old. I'd have rejected a straight-up glass of strong red wine back then, but shoot some ice and Sprite into it, and it was sweet, bubbly, and festive. (And weak.)

Julia.. gin, an old ladies drink? All the guys I know drink it. Gin and tonic is a modern day drink for everyone.

Babycham is probably a drink for someone who doesn't really like alcohol or drink very much.

Sprite has probably got slightly more flavour than our lemonade but it's close. But a spritzer here would have soda water in it rather than lemonade.

The one that gets me is cider. I heard that in the US it's a soft drink while here it can be deadly.. LOL. A good Somerset cider is so alcoholic it catches everyone out. A normal cider is not so bad but is still an alcoholic drink. I like cider, both apple and pear cider is good. The youngsters drink cider at music festivals.. as do I but I'm no youngster.

I remember the first time I was caught out by a strong cider...lethal! It ws in a pub in Oxford...it was bought for me. It was cloudy, and delicious, and I could barely taste the alcohol - so when the next round of drinks was bought I ended up with another one - then when it was my round I could barely walk to the bar...

I was in a lovely little cider house in Shropshire at the weekend - a very local place - not a lager or beer in sight, just decent local ciders. Some were rather strong - one called "Special" (in the UK, if a local drink has 'special' in its name, then beware...)

I also love Pimms. Now the summer is here, I plan to spend a lot of time on various picnics with Pimms and the various bits that go into it (it is almost as fun to make as it is to drink, and very refreshing)

Port and lemon......reminds me of going to visit my grandma in Scarborough, but also of drinking when I was at sixth form (sssshhh, don't tell my mum!). I think we used to drink this because it was easy to steal out of our parents drinks cupboards and could be made paletable with lemonade!!!!

Cider has made a huge come back of late, especially pear cider. Gaymers has got into festivals and it's pretty well all the people drink there. The cider bus at Glasto is legendary. It's where my daughter got hooked on it.

As for the port and lemon Ali, that was exactly the same for me but I wasn't telling before. We used to skive from school in the 6th form and go to a friendly pub with our dinner money, where the publican was friendly and turned a blind eye to our age. Port and lemon was just about all we could afford.

Talking about the drinks I was(n't) drinking at sixth form.......cider and black (cider with a dash of blackcurrent cordial) and lager and lime (lager with a dash of lime cordial), cherry brandy (LOL, can't think of a reason for this other than everyone's parents had this in their drinks cabinets!), and an alcopop-type drink we mixed ourselves with gin, cinzano and Lilt.

I'm sitting here writing this, and thinking about how annoyed I get with my (nearly) 17 year old son when he comes back from parties having drunk a can or two of beer....oops!
