We have a "hands free" device in our car which we both use! I agree with Oprah's No Phone Zone! Have you signed, Melinda? Yesterday was her first NPZD on her show. I wasn't home, so I didn't see it.

I never use my phone in the car when i am driving. I have my phone either on silent or off when i am driving so it doesn't tempt me to pick it up.

Good for both of you! I wish more people felt like you do!

Lauren that's what one girl who was on Oprah's show said she does now - after being in a horrible accident while on her cell [she lost control of her car and it bent around a tree - they had to cut the roof off to get her out, she now has short term memory loss and some other problems].

Its against the law to operate a mobile phone when driving in the UK - you get fined £60 AND you get 3 points on your licence if you get caught. To put that into context, if you get 12 points you get a more or less automatic 1 year driving ban. Three points would also probably have some impact on your insurance. My boss got caught simply synching her blackberry while she was stationery at traffic lights, and they still fined her and gave her the points - she was well cross, but it worked because she turns her mobile onto silent now!

It is also against the law to operate a mobile phone when driving in Australia. In NSW, it is a $253 and 3 demerit point offence and in a school area, the fine is $338 and 4 demerit point on your licence. It is also against the law in NSW to use your phone while the engine is still running if your stopped at the lights.

Melinda, I am lucky not to have a bad experience with it that made me change my attitude, but it too me 4 goes to pass my driving test so i know it is a privledge to have and i am not gonna risk losing my licence or hurting myself or anybody else for things like that. I also work for the Roads and Traffic Authority, so i feel as i know all the road rules more then most people, i should be making sure i set the right example. I also wouldn't want to get pulled over in my work uniform, i would be so embarassed lol

Too bad there needs to be a fine to convince people to not use their phone while driving. You know those drinking and driving videos they show us in highschool? They should add cell phones to that!

It drives me crazy when I see it.

Some states here make it against the law - my state only makes it against the law to text while driving. Heaven forbid we take away the right of someone to use their phone while driving and kill someone!

Lorna I feel talking on the phone and/or texting while driving is just as bad as drunk driving.

Angel you are a smart person!

Its against the law to txt or talk without a hands free device here in California. The talking on the phone is a 120 dollar ticket plus court costs...it comes out to over 200 dollars. Ask my sisters boyfriend he got a ticket.

I wish all our states were uniform in their laws for drunk driving and using a cell phone.
