My daughter and her family lost their home today when their condominium building went up in flames. She was working from home and got out with only the PJs she was wearing. She says she will scream if anyone else tells her "It's only stuff." Even her wedding ring is gone. And I can't make it "all better"...

Rob I am so sorry - that is horrible! Thank heaven your daughter/family are all right - but the loss of "stuff" is terrible. You can make it all better by just being there for her whether she wants to scream, cry, laugh, curse, whatever - Daddy and Daughter, nothing like it.

So sorry to hear that, Rob. That is quite devastating. I'm glad your daughter is safe though! Did she have insurance on contents? Does she live near you?

I lost my wedding ring years ago when it fell down a heat register. My husband eventually replaced it with a replica and it means just as much as the first one did.

I have an irrational fear of fire that keeps getting worse. I was just thinking the other day that I should have a safety deposit box to keep pictures and videos in. My main fear is that I won't be home and my dogs won't get out.

so sad indeed :(

not just for her but for you - A father should always want to be there and make it all better - how could you not.

She is very lucky to have you!

Did she lose all her family pictures? Maybe you could have a family picture copied and framed for her.

When I try to imagine losing all my stuff like that, it feels like falling in a dream.

That's awful Rob - your poor girl! I hope the community rallies with support but most of all she has her family to be there, as Melinda said.
The photo idea is a good one - ask around family & friends for copies & have an album made.
Blessings will come from this.

I am so sorry. My Grandmother's home burnt down several years ago. I remember people saying it was only stuff. That I so hard to hear even though you are so thankful that no one was hurt.

Luckily, she posted all of her good pictures on Facebook, they have good insurance coverage, and their friends have raised a good bit of cash to help ease their way through this crisis. My older son got burned out several years back, and it was pretty rough but he recovered, and so will my daughter.

I can't thank you all enough for your kind words.

Picture backups are great! I scanned nearly 1,500 pictures last year and saved them all on SmugMug. As long as they stay in business and I pay my yearly premiums, I'm good to go.

Sounds like things are going well for the time-being. I hope they can rebuild soon.

That is very sad news! Glad to hear friends are helping out which helps keep my belief that people in general are good.

Double wow to hear it happened to your oldest son! I truly think no one knows what to say in difficult times that is why sayings like "it's only stuff" were created.

Thoughts and Prayers for strength through this trying time!
