Why afraid to shave? Unless you're at zero, knicks shouldn't be much of an issue. I use Nad's cold wax system and love it. Inexpensive, lasts a long time, and I can do it at home. Although, most people have a hard time ripping the strips hard/fast enough themselves to do it. ;-)

I'm at 9 so pretty low. Just paranoid I guess. I tried using wax and thought I did a pretty good job till the next day when I was all bruised. :pinch:

Ya know, I hadn't thought of that. Since it's was my boy with ITP, that was not an issue for him.

Have you heard of sugaring? It's how East Indians do it. Not sure if I used the right name for it though. They use a mixture of sugar water that gets sticky and then some thread thing that just cuts the hair off at the skin level (vs. pulling it by the root). You might google "hair removal methods in India" or something like that to see if you can find it. All of our Indian friends do it this way.

I always just shaved, no matter what my count was. A razor nick won't cause you to bleed to death. Just put pressure on it or get a styptic pencil.

Good call! Forgot about those. Hubby uses them on his face sometimes. :)

Hi girls,
I used to shave legs regularly, until one day the nicks bled through a pair of white 3/4 pants. I went to Church & wasn't aware until my son asked me what happened? Had to go home & change! Now I use a rechargeable ladies shaver - not happy with the results, but no cuts.
Haven't tried waxing, just haven't got around to it.

I had a PTT test (a timed bleed). The lab tech made a VERY tiny cut in my forearm and told me it should stop in 7-9 minutes...3 hours later I was still bleeding. So even a small knick can bleed a lot

Have you tried depillatory creams? They stink to high heaven, but you simply slather it on, leave for 6-10 mins and use the scraper to scrape the gunk off, taking the hair with it. et voila, baby smooth for 5-7 days (usually lasts a bit longer than shaving, but not much) with no blades and no bruising. Uk brand is called Veet - not sure what there is elsewhere in the world.

i shave my legs and bikini area - it's really my knees that i tend to nick - so long as you're using a safety razor and are careful you should be fine. i get my arms waxed but i have that done in a salon - they're very quick and make it as painless as possible and they've never made me bruise.

I wonder how laser hair removal would impact ITP. I have considered it, but I haven't researched it enough to be sure of the outcome. Just a thought.

I'm also curious if anyone knows any bad effects from laser hair removal. I started doing laser hair removal about 6 months before I was diagnosed with ITP, and have always wondered in the back of my head if it was possibly a part of the cause of my ITP. I was told I couldn't do the treatment if I was on prednisone, since it can cause light sensitivity and possibly burn your skin. I had a few bruises that they went over on my legs one time with the laser. The bruises got swollen and looked awful. The next time I went in I mentioned it, and the nurse said that lasers should never go over bruises since the laser looks for dark pigments, so she went around the bruises I had the next time. I never went in when I had petechiae, so I don't know what the laser would do to that.

That's what I was afraid of--but it sounds like if you weren't having any ITP issues at the time than it wouldn't be a problem. Thanks for your feedback.

Got a rechargeable because my dr. didn't suggest shaving for awhile. It is ok for my underarms during the winter but does nothing for my legs. I think I am pretty over my shaving fear and buy blades for my razor tomorrow. I'm excitied! lol

when i had taken my laser hair removal treatment, i was very much afraid of the treatment & result, but the doctor and nurses there made me very comfortable. laser treatment is indeed very effective for those who want a perfect hair less and smooth skin. i have yet completed half of my session and in few months my sessions will get completed.

laser hair removal : best for me

I always shave no matter the count too. I do nick myself around the regularly but it doesn't seem to bleed for long. I once got a little cut on a bit of glass at work and it oozed blood for 5 hours. I still didn't bleed to death.

This is an old message, so not sure if you’re still around, but I had laser hair removal all over (arms, legs, bikini, underarms) about 14 years ago and I cannot recommend it enough. No more razors, shaving cream, stubble - nothing. No worries about anything hair-related, like last-minute dates or the like. It’s been a godsend and the best money I’ve ever spent.
I did not experience anything with respect to my platelets during or after treatment; they’ve always been the same - low! : )
