Anyone doing this? I used TCM to get pregnant (infertility/PCOS) and now that my son is 6 months old and I was recently diagnosed with ITP, I'm thinking of turning to it again.

Just curious if anyone else was seeing results?

My chiropractor also does Accupunture. I find it helpful do a series of treatments when I have insomnia, but it hasn't done anything for my platelets.

Accupuncture rocks but i wasnt using it for my counts i used it for relaxation and some residual post chemo neuropathy. Great stuff.

I just love the holestic view that they take with accupuncture...

I find it helpful in managing stress and I think it also helped with fatigue and joint pain, although maybe just relaxing for an hour and focusing on that, I had some stress relief, which helped manage the joint pain. It did nothing for platelets.

Chrunchybaby - I was also diagnosed when I had an infant (she was 8 months). I totally think this is hormone related for me. Sorry - no experience with acupuncture.

It's important to relax. If you are constantly stressed your body has no chance to heal itself. Many of us never truly relax, especially those of us with more than one issue. relaxing is critical to well being.

Thanks everyone, I agree - relaxing is huge. The stress of all this (and the stress it's causing re: breastfeeding) is a lot.

Fresh Boarder - interesting...what did you find most helpful to get back on track? I wouldn't be surprised if the true underlying issue was hormone related since I know my hormones are pretty messed up since I have PCOS, too.

I talked to the acupuncturist and made an appointment for Sat. so we'll see how it goes. This is a different one (more affordable) than I went to for infertility, but she seems to think the supply issues (hormones i guess) are related to ITP, etc. All blood related issues somehow...

I'm still trying to get 'back on track' I guess since I'm still dealing with low platelets and treatments. My worse platelet crash to date (not including diagnosis time) was the weekend I completely weaned my baby. I think it was the stress. I know it takes months for hormones to get back to normal once BF is done but so far my platelets are still a bit haywire.

My dr practices TCM as well as western medicine. She has put me on a course of Chinese herbs. I've only been on them for a week, so it's too soon to tell, but they're apparently to support my spleen, my white blood cells and my red blood cells, while we try to reduce my steroid dose & keep my platelets above 30k.

She has also modified my diet, so I'm totally gluten-free and off all sugar.

I post about the herbs, diet etc on my blog portiafaceslife; ITP and me

I have been seeing an acupunturist for 14 months, since I was diagnosed. I ended up having a splenectomy because I got fed up with crashing counts. I tried herbs and qigong also. Even though the eastern medicine had no direct effect on my platelet count, it helped so many other areas that I will never adandon it. I believe it made me strong enough for surgery and strong enough to deal with the emotional roller coaster of this disease.

I have had ITP for 16 yrs & I just started going for accupuncture. Now changes yet, but it's been only a few weeks. She also suggested adding dikon radishes to my diet. Hope this helps.

Has weaning breast feeding and your hormones leveling out helped your platelet counts? I had my baby in May and am still dealing with counts below 20k, lowest 11k highest 60k on 60mg prednisone a day. I've been getting IVIG monthly but it doesn't last long. I really don't want to wean but we might have to try other options for treatments. I exclusively pump due to latch and lack of transferring milk so its not the experience I was hoping for but my baby is getting breast milk. I'm really torn about weaning but know that I need to get better.

I'm trying acupunture as well, but just stared and haven't seen results yet.
Any advice or experiences would be appreciated!

Have you considered homeopathy? I would really encourage you to search for posts by "April" on this site. She is a homeopath and also had a daughter with ITP. She has successfully treated a number of people from this site and she is currently treating my son (after failed IVIG) and he's doing very very well. The nice thing about homeopathy is it is natural, safe, and you could continue nursing, and most importantly, it WORKS. If you would like April's contact info let me know and I'll send it to you privately.

Best Wishes,

patti
