I've tried keeping my protein quite high, as protein is good for making megakarocytes which in turn break down into thrombocytes.

I'm vegetarian so I get graze boxes sent to my work twice a week which are packed with lots of nuts and fruit - if you're in the UK they're £3 a box inc postage from www.graze.com - you rate their products (so you don't have to have things you don't like) and they make sure you get a good variety - so I gorge myself on walnuts, pecans, cashews and almonds and it does seem to help.

There isn't any one diet that works for everyone. If that were true, this board would be empty.

Some people, very few, have found a diet that seems to keep their counts in a safe range, but it's different for everyone.

If you have digestive issues that cause inflammation in your bowel, then a diet that clears it up could possibly help your platelets. This was mentioned at conference by Dr. Liebman in Orlando, and I think it has helped me personally.

But that's not a certain diet, it's an individual diet that deals with an individual's problems - for example, gluten intolerance, fructose malapbsorption or lactose intolerance, or even bowel diseases like colitis.

It's really hard to explain the miraculous workings of the human body and all it's interactions. It's possible for ITP to be secondary to other conditions such as Lupus or H Pylori infection that when treated can improve counts. Since Most ITP is autoimmune, if you reduce the overall allergin load or factors that are causing the body to pump out antibodies against itself, it's possible to see improvements like Erica mentions above.

Most of us see it as remission versus cure. You can cure H Pylori, but if it's truely a immune condition then the body has learned to look for the antibodies and it's possible to see it return with the right trigger.

As Bunnie says, it's not that easy. The first 8 years after my diagnosis, I had no real reason for ITP. Then I got diagnosed with Lupus (had no evidence of it before that) and realized that ITP was the first and only symptom for a long time.

It's sometimes impossible to know what is going on in cases like that. You may discover the real reason years down the line or you may never know. There are no real tests to discover why unless you have symptoms of another problem. You can try different diets and see what happens, but it's all trial and error and they might not work.

People tend to think that ITP is like anemia - add iron to the diet and you can fix it. It's not like that at all.

Haha I'm glad I'm not the only one who's had people suggest "have you tried increasing your iron intake?" as they automatically assume iron can fix any blood related problem. And it's trying to remind people that it's auto-immune and that my blood happens to be the target, not the source of the problem. I also told one friend that they'd do a splenectomy as a last resort and she now thinks that I should just have it out and be done with it - much as I try to explain, my spleen is not the source of the problem and removing something at the end of the process isn't going to fix the root of the problem!

Bah.
