Water fasting, anyone?

Water fasting, anyone? was created by JazzenJanzen
Anyone tried water fasting?.... like a 7 to 10 day water fast...

As soon as I'm off the Prednisone and been off for a while, I'm going to try it and see what happens. Other autoimmune diseases have been cured this way.... CURED!... I thought I'd give it a whirl and wanted to see if anyone else has tried it.

If you don't know anything about water fasting, don't freak out me... read and research first. :) (I was one of those who freaked out first....)

Where would we research? When I google water fasting I only come up with questionable websites and/or discussion boards.

Wikipedia is just written by anybody. I haven't looked recently about what they say of ITP but when I did look some time ago it was all out of date and some of it was just plain rubbish. So I wouldn't rely on it for anything much.

For me, I couldn't do fasting because, call me odd, but my body needs food on a fairly regular basis.. it was built like that.

Yeah.. wikipedia isn't very helpful...
Fasting and Eating For Health, by Joel Fuhrman is a VERY good book if you really want to learn about it. He's an MD who's all about nutritional excellence and preventing disease by healthy eating (and occasional fasting).

Not for me thanks, not eating doesnt make you feel better nor does it make your body feel better, you dont want your body to start shutting down. Its the Immune system thats attacking the cells not the food, id take this research with a pinch of salt, some of the people "cured" prob went into remission on their own.
Sorry for the sinisism

I would think if a water fast would "cure" ITP, Graves Disease, lupus, any or all autoimmune diseases at least one of our doctors would have known and told us to water fast and we would be "cured".

Skeptical!

I have tried them all. It's like psoriasis which I also have. Nothing and I mean nothing has touched the psoriasis.

I have taken colstrum and that seemed to help the platelets a bit. It has platelets in it, actually. Or some kind of platelet former.

I don't think i could ever fast from water. I have a tendancy to get deyhdrated very quickly and end up in hospital on a IV drip when i don't drink enough water.

Angel, water fasting supposedly means eating and drinking only water. Agreed, it's a daft name for it and doesn't say what it means.

Oh okay silly me lol, i should have researched it. I was thinking that was a very weird suggestion to be making and that no doctor could ever endorse not drinking water lol.

I don't know, but there have been times when I didn't eat for a few days and I felt like falling over....zero energy. You can't function like that.

There is also the point that your body needs nutrients. You stop eating, you lose vitamin absorption. You lose potassium from drinking a lot of water and that could cause trouble, especially if someone is on Prednisone. It doesn't sound healthy to me.

as someone said above, if fasting could cure all these diseases our doctors would be telling us about it. then they could basically send all the nurses home, close up shop, and work at macdonalds. i'd say, take the steroids, chemo, cut out your spleen, but be afraid to go without cheeseburgers for a few days.
remember, they havent cured a single disease yet, but they're working out it. send a few more dollars, we're real close.

Do I detect sarcasm? Not from my Freckles!

You are assuming that all we eat are cheeseburgers? I had a grilled chicken salad for lunch today. I consider that healthy, although the lettuce could have been tainted with the latest E. Coli and the chicken could have been raised on steroids. You can't win.

Yeah... this is a fairly touchy subject.. I did hesitate to ask in the first place.

Sandi - Yes, your right.. there's no way anyone could do it while on Prednisone. And yes, you get low energy.. it's a time to relax and take a break, if you will.

Well I'm definitely going to try it... after much research and thought.. I don't know if it'll fix my ITP, but it sure is worth giving it a shot! I still I'm working my way off the Prednisone.. but I'll let everyone know how it goes when I do it!

Thank you, Sandi! I really do appreciate that.. and all your help and advice, for that matter! This whole website has been a huge help to me.

I won't be doing it on my own, if that makes you feel any better.... I'm going to a fasting clinic in Northern California... we'll be keeping a close eye on the pesky platelets. But of course.. this isn't going to happen for at least another month... *sigh*

I had to look that up - saw a clinic in Santa Rosa. Seems expensive - will insurance cover any of it?

If I had insurance, it would cover it.. but alas, the "insurance" I have is just through the county I live in and is VERY limited. So I'm paying out of pocket.

I'll be blogging about it, if anyone cares to know:

To each their own.

I felt the same way when I first heard about it. I actually yelled at my friend who was doing it... who then calmly asked me my basis for getting upset. Then I realized my basis was my own opinion, which wasn't backed by any research or experience. So I went home that night and read and research. Now that I've done that, it's time for the experience. :)

Just a quick update while I'm on the computer:
I'm on day 10 of my water fast. It's been interesting, to say the least. But what's truly interesting is what I've seen here!! A women with a headache for 16 years (from a car accident) fasted for 41 days, and no longer suffers from the pain (which all her doctors said was incurable). I've seen a few with arthritis be cured... Diabetes (type 2). High blood pressure and hypertension. One women had fibromyalgia.. not any more! Another had lupus....had being the keyword now. :) Simply amazing. It just blows my mind what the body can do when given the chance to heal.

I'll have a CBC done on Wednesday.. We'll see!!!

Jazz:

Those people who are telling you they are cured - are they still being treated with you right now or have they been released? What happens when they go back to eating food again? On what basis are they "cured" and how long has it been?

Most of them have been eating for a while.. not all, though. And when I say eating, I don't mean back to hamburgers, cookies, and soda.. you know? We're talking fruits, veggies, nuts, whole grains, beans, etc. Water fasting is a tool for regaining health and a true means to reboot the system... if one don't understand nutrition and what food does to their body.. and just goes back to eating crapy after fasting, than the fast is for not.

Some of these people aren't just telling me... I have seen it with my own eyes. I see them come in, limping or what have you, and soon they are walking about with no pain.

Of course I haven't seen everyone who's ever been here, however.. This place has been around for years now... but from what I've heard, as long as the say eating healthy, they remain in great condition.
The basis for being cured is they no longer have it.. I'm not sure what you mean by "basis"...

This is where I am, and video upfront explains it much better than I can. (I have a tendency to get preachy if you let me go on about it. :D )

By "basis", I meant labs, etc.

Oh, I didn't mean that you'd see everyone who's ever been there - I meant are you talking to people who are still there or people who have left? I just wondered if they had past graduates come in and speak.

I'm a born skeptic so it takes a lot to convince me of anything. At the same time, I'm very curious which is why I ask all the questions.

Yes, we have labs done.. every week in fact. Depending on the person will depend on the lab (of course, we ALL get Metabolic Panels... and someone like me will get a CBC..) Check blood pressure, urine tests, and more. Everything is scientifically backed. :)

I know people do come back and speak, but I haven't seen that yet... in fact... now that I think about it... I do believe someone is coming in soon... hmmmm.. I can't remember when, though...

My best friend is also very skeptical. I call him Mr. Skeptic. :) I think even when he experiences something he still may not believe it. But in the end, the skeptics are the ones who really have a solid grasp on whatever it is they settle on, cause they don't just jump head first, eyes closed, into something. I appreciate that.
