Ann has a list of 70 things, a lot of them foods, that people here have said can raise platelets. Ann??

I remember blueberries are on the list, and don't some people talk about celery?

We wish it was that simple.

I expect in truth that I said what your doctors said, that there are no easy cures and that no foods will help.

I appreciate the extensive list, but your conclusion is really not a fair or accurate statement. For one, my daughter was cured of her ITP with a particular homeopathic remedy. She was 12 years old at diagnosis, with a count of 5k, going as low as 3k and lived at < 10 most of the time. The only two conventional treatments we allowed were WinRho and IVIG, both of which nearly killed her with anaphylactic reactions. Once I found the right remedy for her, her platelets shot up, going from 11k to 411k almost overnight.

The conventional treatments didn't work, not even a little bit. When I gave her one single dose of the homeopathic remedy, the response was dramatic, both in her platelet count and also emotional and behavioral aspects. (and most of these were not related to ITP itself.)
She responded to the homeopathic remedy, but not to conventional treatment. And, since we just celebrated her 8th, ITP-free year, I'd call that a sustained response.

Yes, I know April, but 80% of children will recover spontaneously and I would suggest that your child was one of that 80%.

There may well be a herb or so that will turn out to be a cure, after all many drugs come from natural sources, but I don't think it's going to be homeopathy.

Well, I have to disagree with you, Ann, for a number of reasons.

For one, she was a mature 12, having her cycle for a full year. They had done a good number of tests on her to rule out various other things and after nearly 6 months of treatment, they gave her a diagnosis of chronic ITP, saying she was responding (or, in her case, not responding!) like a teenager or adult, rather than a child.

Secondly, she had almost zero positive response to WinRho, her initial treatment (though she did go into anaphylactic shock from it, and nearly died). Then, she was given IVIG weekly for the duration that she had it. I didn't know enough at the time to refuse it, as she reacted horribly to each one, feeling like death would be better. And all for a rise of counts to the 20's or 30's for 2 days, then back down <10, usually <5, by the next week's count check.

Third, the etiology was not one of those that are known to be common to spontaneous remissions, i.e. she hadn't had any vaccines, no OTC or prescription meds, she'd had no virus or illness or fever.

But, the main reason I consider her to be cured, and not just having remitted spontaneously, is because of the many diverse changes we saw in her, both physically and emotionally and behaviorally. These were dramatic changes, within 12 hours after giving her the remedy. These changes occurred 4 days before a good platelet count was reflected in her. She was so I'll, I seriously thought she was dying, as did the nurses and doctors. There was great concern. 12 hours later, you could not even tell she'd been sick. Her platelets went from 11k to 411k in 4 days.

That was on her 13th birthday and we just celebrated her 21st birthday last week. So she has been at normal counts for 8 years now, her only treatment being an occasional dose of her same, constitutional remedy.

That's the thing with homeopathy-- it treats the WHOLE person, not just the platelets. The platelets being low is only one symptom among many of the underlying disease. If you simply artificially raise the platelets (through TPO drugs) or suppress the immune system, you've done nohing to improve that fundamental, underlying disease. Instead, you're adding on new side effects and masking what symptoms there are. Heal he underlying disease and the platelets will quickly come back into balance.

My understanding is that all disease is a disturbance in the energetic or electro-magnetic field that surrounds every living thing. By smoothly out or reconnecting his energy field, healing occurs. You need an energetic medicine to cure an energetic disturbance. Drugs, herbs and food all act on the body chemically-not energetically.

I agree with april. Not an accurate conclusion.

I have had ITP for 20+ years. Had the splenectomy (in '94) and prednisone as standard lines of treatment. But last year prednisone did not sort things out. Nor did an ivig (other than ST boost). What worked? A radical change in my diet, my way of life and Reiki.

Today? No drugs, no ITP symptoms and a normal lifestyle.

I would say that is success and something that worked.

My sister was 16 and spontaneously remitted a year after being considered chronic. Age is definitely a factor in the statistics but you can't expect everyone to fit into a certain category and react accordingly.

I'm happy that a natural diet works for some people, but it does not work for all. Right before my current crash that so far has been completely non-responsive (and the worst of my life), I had gone to a completely natural diet, organic fruits/vegetables and small portion of organic lean meat only, no red meat, and starting to cut from whole wheat to no grains after I was diagnosised with a fatty liver. Plus, exercise every day. Basically, I was eating the best I had been in my life when I crashed over night. Not saying that it is not good for people to eat organic fruits/vegetables, lean meat, and without chemicals, just don't think that it can "cure" ITP for some people.

No one suggested diet alone will help you manage your ITP condition. Evidence last year for me was, despite being on a very strict diet for 3 months, my platelets crashed to <5 while on 25 mg prednisone per day. Platelets crashing like that while on corticosteriods had never happened to me before. But Reiki clearly helped me get past the worst.

The one thing I wonder of this episode last year is whether the detox I was undergoing led to the severe bleed. And once through it I was at a turning point.

Today, I am fortunate to lead a relatively normal life, one without heavy drugs/medication, routine bloodtests and hospital visits. And yes I still adhere to a stricter diet, primarily gluten-free and no sugar.
