Need some feedback on 6-MP was created by jlollman
Hello,
I posted on the childrens forum but wanted to also post here.
I was wanting to get some experience stories on people/kids taking 6-MP.
I have a 4yr old who we are considering giving it to.
Are we going to have to worry about him getting infections since he is going to school?
Any info. would be great!!

Thanks!

Julie

6MP is a chemo drug frequently given to children who have ALL (Acute lymphocytic leukemia). Since it is a chemo drug you have a risk of permanently damaging a person's DNA with it which can lead to future cancers. Not the least of which is MDS (leukemia pre-cursor). It's certainly effective as a chemo drug, but in light of other options that exist for ITP (both natural and drug options) I would wonder why they're suggesting this? It seems a rather strong course to take on a child so young without leukemia (not that'd I'd do it on a child with leukemia, but I think you can understand what I'm saying).

6MP is more commonly used for ITP than one would think, especially children.

Any immunosuppressant carries the risk of future cancers, even Prednisone. This is why we must balance the 'benefit vs risk' and it sure seems like Julie is doing just that by checking it out.

Good luck with your decision, Julie. All treatment decisions are tough ones.
