Non-responsive to Prednisone and IVIg

Hi all,
I was diagnosed with ITP about a month ago. I am 22 years old and am a very active individual. I was given 100 mg of prednisone when I first visited the hospital with counts of 4,000. I was released with counts of 7,000 and after two weeks of pred. went up to 24,000 only to see my counts drop back down to 2,000. Again, I was hospitalized and given IVIg over two days to no avail. The following week my numbers were still low so my hematologist opted for a higher dose of IVIg, yet again it failed. I am at 3,000 right now without any bleeding and am not in the hospital. My hematologist wants to start Rituxan next week and I am just curious if the lack of response to both prednisone and IVIg is any prediction of how I will respond to Rituxan.

Thanks

hello acblue. Welcome to the boards. You seem to have a common story, believe it or not! I'm thinking that your non-responsivness to previous treatments have not indication of how you will respond to Rituxan. I've never had IVIg but I also had no response to prednisone at all. I did have Rituxan and it seems to be working for me.

Hello - I'm glad you found us. The answer to your question is, no. Every treatment works differently and response to one does not predict response to another. Good luck with Rituxan - I hope it works for you!
