My son (12) was diagnosed with ITP four months ago and has stayed mostly below 18K. About 2 mos ago his White blood cells dropped out of normal range for a couple of wks and they were thinking about checking for aplastic anemia but it came back up. Then he had IVIG and it dropped back down out of normal. Does anyone know if IVIG can affect white blood cells? His hemoglobin is always fine. Does anyone else ever feel this constant threat that it could be something worse?????? This is so much harder with a child than if it were me!!

KM:

Every great once in a while, ITP is the first symptom of something else. That is rare though. It's best not to focus on that. Very few children, especially boys, move on to other diagnoses.

Whites can drop with some treatments, so it is probably that. Two other disorders that can go along with ITP and low white cells are Evans Syndrome and Lupus. If his white count is going back up on it's own, try not to worry.
