Has Anyone Experienced Lower Hemoglobin Levels?

I was just wondering if anyone having treatment for their ITP experienced their hemoglobin levels going lower due to their treatment? My hemoglobin levels have been having wide swings since I've been on my different treatments while in the hospital. I was treated with different doses of Decadron--from 9mg to 40mg (and also 50 mg of prednisone); then had three treatments with IVIG (two with steriods). One treatment of IVIG was given over 24 hours which did help my platelets to go up (enough to get out of the hospital). But during my last outpatient blood draw (2 1/2 days after last treatment), my hemoglobin was low again. Prior to going into the hospital, my hemoglobin was okay.

Would appreciate your thoughts.
Thank you,
Dee Dee

P.S. Also had two platelet transfusions; one that worked and brought platelets up--the other did nothing.

My son's reds and whites dropped after ivig. Not significantly, but they were low by the lab standard.

Thanks, Patti, for the reply. I used to read on the older forum that some people did get lower reds and whites and thought I would asked to see if others experienced this.

Thank you

My counts started out real low and have stayed on the low side since. Hemoglobin is a protein used by red blood cells to distribute oxygen to other tissues and cells in the body. Low levels indicate anemia.

My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

Don has been low on hemoglobin for a couple of years before his platelets dropped. Now he's low on both RBC & platelets. When his platelets go up, so does his RBC and vice versa. He isn't bleeding that much to drop his RBC when his platelets are low, so don't know why. He was on iron suppliments for years, but they didn't do any good.

Thanks for all your replys. I looked at my last cbc test on April 16 before my platelets crashed (July 18, 2010), and my hemoglobin was normal at that time. I had been in remission for 4 years--and during that time, they would go up and down a little--but nothing to worry about. Now I am more on the anemic side. I don't feel too bad, though (especially since I got out of the hospital :).

Thanks for all your input.

Whenever my platelets dropped sometimes red blood cell count would drop too. They treated this simply by giving me full blood transfusion during the end of the course of treatment for the platelets. Usually once my platelets start to go back up then so does the red blood cells and anything else that may have accompanied the platelet drop. They are not too worried because they know it recoveres when the platelets recover but keep an eye on it all the same.
